The Gregory D's Hobbiton Build

Preface:

I have always held a fondness for all things Tolkien. Reading through his books gave me a glance into an ever expanding world that I always looked forward to returning to.

When the films were released it pulled me into the world even further. I was excited to see a number of familiar things on the big screen that happened to align with the images I crafted while reading the books. Of course there were many disconnects from the book but I quickly grew to appreciate each presentation of the story for what each one was.

In 2014 I had downloaded Minecraft in hopes to better understand my nephew’s fascination for the game. I inadvertently got hooked. By the next year I was working 56 hours a week at my job. Add to that spending time with my wife, our two young halflings and maintaining our house and I would often find myself exhausted at the end of the day. Even given my tired state Minecraft afforded me an easy way to unwind at the end of the day whether it be of a few minutes or a couple hours.

One night while browsing the internet I saw some Minecraft builds where others were working to recreate places from Tolkien’s work. I saw many dedicated people looking to recreate the TRUE Tolkien image of these places and not necessarily the new Hollywood spin. They are awesome and worth looking into but for me I wanted to do my own personal take on a build.

I chose to do a 1:1 solo-build of Hobbiton.

Block by block.

Some of the objectives were:
  1. Provide a comfortable playing experience by exploring scale and proportion.
  2. Be able to translate the various sized Hollywood facades so they are all 1:1.
  3. Be able to enter every single Hobbit Smial.
  4. Extend from Bag End to Gandalf's Cutting to the Green Dragon and Bywater Road.
  5. Have fun.

Future goals:

With work/life as it is progress is generally limited to a winter hobby. So rather than hoard the map to myself I wish to share it with anyone else who shares my love of the Middle Earth.

Resource pack:

The included resource pack was originally built off of the "Faithful" pack. I've since replaced 70+ images with textures I made. I also borrowed a quaint little furnace and some beautiful stained glass from the "Hobbiton Texture" pack I found online.

pdate #2

Growth across Hobbiton has been slow but steady as of late. We have continued to expand our borders, fit out hobbit smials, add some historical bits, and hide some more secrets.

I've also realized that there are now Structure Blocks available. And while I will not use them to create new content I have found ways to use them to alter content. You can now toggle the Party Field decorations on/off and we have a nifty door on Bag End to play with.

Enjoy!
