Lenz and his wife Helen are an elderly couple living in a small wooden house with a flat roof on the edge of a pond.
Lenz has always been a very shy man and a few words. When he was young, he often traveled in the Great Taiga in search of rivers to fish. One of his greatest friends is the cartographer Ralph Unger who helped draw many maps. Ralph convinced him to marry his daughter Helen with whom he had ten children. But Lenz was almost always traveling, so he does not know her children well. He spent most of his life fishing alone and in silence, even in the rain. Now he is very old and rarely moves away from his small pier. To help his friend Ralph get some paper he had a small but fully automatic sugar cane factory.
Helen is younger than her husband but loves him a lot. She is a good cook and knows more than a hundred ways to cook fish and therefore spends much of her time in her small kitchen.
