"Trinity" was the first nuclear test, taking place on July 16th, 1945. An implosion type weapon, using conventional explosives to compress a Plutonium sphere the size of your first into Critical Mass, it exploded with a force of about 20,000 tons of TNT. A weaponized version of this bomb was later dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki, on August 9th, 1945. The fireball from the test (at 6 milliseconds after detonation) was roughly 115-130 meters across, later growing to be even larger.

The "Trinity" device, code-named "The Gadget", was lifted onto a 100-foot steel tower in the desert of New Mexico, seen here:

The device was detonated at 5:29 AM GMT, producing heats that could previously only be found in the core of our sun, and winds that could only be found on Neptune. It was heard and seen by people as far as 150 miles away, and it even tricked some into thinking the sun was rising. The "Trinity" mushroom cloud rose to roughly 7.5 miles in height, many minutes after the detonation.

The "Trinity" nuclear test kicked off the Atomic Age, a long series of events that almost lead to the destruction of life as we know it; however, it did also lead to the weapons that ended the deadliest war in history, and lead to great sources of power. I guess we can all say that the invention of nuclear weapons is both a blessing and a curse upon humanity.

Notes on Understanding Nuclear Weapons:

The "Trinity" nuclear test was 20 kilotons. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima, "Little Boy", was a 16 kiloton Gun-Type nuclear weapon, which would fire a Uranium "bullet" on to a Uranium target to create a nuclear reaction. The bomb dropped on Nagasaki, "Fat Man", was a 20-23 kiloton Implosion-Type nuclear weapon, the same type as the Trinity test. In 1952, the first Thermonuclear weapon was tested in the Pacific, "Ivy Mike", with a yield of 10.4 megatons. A thermonuclear bomb uses a two stage process, in which an Implosion-Type nuclear weapon is used to generate heat and pressure, which compresses a secondary stage into critical mass. This creates much larger explosions than the earlier, single-stage Implosion and Gun-Type nuclear weapons, and after a few years, Thermonuclear weapons replaced all earlier nuclear weapon designs.

Nuclear Weapon Terms:

Kiloton- 1,000 tons of TNT

Megaton- 1,000,000 Tons of TNT

Thermonuclear- Using the heat and pressure of one nuclear explosion to activate it's secondary stage.

Gun-Type- When a Uranium "bullet" it propelled by conventional explosives into a Uranium target, forcing the atoms together, and creating a nuclear explosion. This design was weaponized in "Little Boy", and dropped on Hiroshima.

Implosion-Type- When a sphere of Plutonium is compressed into itself by conventional explosives until Critical Mass is reached, creating a nuclear explosion. This design was weaponized in "Fat Man", and dropped on Nagasaki.

NOTES:

Atomic bombs and Hydrogen bombs are the same thing, stop acting like they are different types of nuclear bombs! Hydrogen bombs, for some reason, is just used to refer to Thermonuclear bombs. Atomic bombs refer to ALL nuclear weapons.
