The USS Belknap was the lead ship of her class of guided-missile cruisers. She was commissioned on November 7th, 1964. On November 22nd, 1975 off the coast of the Sicily the USS Belknap collided with the USS John F. Kennedy. The collision cost the lives of seven sailors aboard the Belknap and one on the Kennedy. The Belknap was severely damaged in the accident and suffered a severe fire immediately afterward. The Belknap was reconstructed in the Philidelphia Naval Shipyard from 1976 to 1980. From there she served as the flagship of the Sixth Fleet from 1985 to 1986. She went on to serve a role in the 1989 Malta Summit housing then President George H. W. Bush. The Belknap was decommissioned on February 15th, 1995.
