The USS Newport (LST-1179) was the lead ship of her class. She was a tank landing ship. She was launched on February 3rd, 1968 and was decommissioned September 30th, 1992. After leaving US Navy service she was transferred to the Mexican Navy. There she still sails under the name, ARM Papaloapan (P-411).
