During the Middle Ages, (Medieval Times) black cats were a sign that death was about to occur. Then people started killing 'witches', which were really just normal women and their black cats. But with all the cats being killed, the mice population got out of control and started spreading a disease which killed over 25,000 people. Rip the witch killers.
These superstitions that black cats were evil travelled to America and people, again, started killing the witches and their cats. So if you live in America black cats are bad luck I guess. Also Halloween.
But some people in other countries believe black cats are good luck and actually worship them. In Ancient Egypt they had a cat goddess, Bastet. People who owned cats would get really sad if their cat died and treated their death like a family member's. Archaeologists have found massive tombs full of mummified cats and stuff.
In England and other places, a black cat is lucky if its on a ship. Pirates think that if a black cat walks on a ship and off again, they would all drown. Fishermen's families had black cats so the fishermen would come home with a lot of fish.
Japanese people love cats. They think all cats are lucky. They put the Maneki Neko cat statue on the front desk of their business or shop. The statue is a black or white cat with one paw up, waving good fortune. Neko is cat in Japanese if you didn't know. Single women in Japan own black cats because apparently it increases your chance of getting a boyfriend.
If you actually read all that good job. Black cat history lesson end.
Bye.
