La Muerte, is the Ruler and Queen of the Land of The Remembered, and is a supporting character in The Book of Life. She is the estranged wife of Xibalba and is an ancient, immortal goddess of benevolence, kindness, goodness, generosity, purity, forgiveness, mercy, hope, love, passion, light and death.
She first entered the plot of The Book of Life when she and her husband Xibalba made a bet concerning who the mortal Maria would marry either of her childhood best friends: Manolo or Joaquin.
Story:
On the evening of the 31st of October, 1999, a young girl was wandering about in the depths of her dark, forsaken house. It was Halloween and she had nothing to dress up into. She searched everywhere in that house but no piece of cloth was found that could be a costume. Tears exploded from her eyes as her efforts were in vain. She ran outside and sat on her house's old porch.
As she cried and cried, an old figure appeared in front of her. The old lady comforted the child and offered her two marigolds.
"Put these on your hair and you shall have a costume for tonight's trick-or-treat festivities," said the lady.
The young girl readily agreed and was about to thank the old lady when she vanished. The woman was nowhere in sight.
The lass hastily put the two, bright, gold flowers in her hair as she was instructed, but she felt odd. Suddenly, a tornado of red spun itself, surrounding the terrified girl.
After the event, the girl was no more a girl. No more a mortal. She was a god. The new goddess of death and light. She became the new La Muerte.
