I chose this tale because it's french, and I'm french, but also because it's a tale I like and it brings back memories from when I was little.
The tale have multiple origins, like all fairy tales, but the most interesting origin is from Henri VIII, king of England, who had multiple wives, that he executed for false reasons whenever he didn't want them anymore, since divorce wasn't really a thing at the moment.

βThe Taleβ
Blue-Beard is a wealthy, noble man from the 17th/18th century who got many wives, but no one knows what happened to them.
At some point, he visits his neighbour and asks to marry one of his daughters.
At a banquet, he chooses forcefully the youngest daughter to be his wife. She then lives within his castle.
One day, he gives her the keys to every door in the castle, because he must leave for the country, but he forbids her to open the underground chamber, lest she suffers his wrath.
She invites her sisters and have a party, but her curiosity get the best of her and she opens the forbiddenroom, which is, to her horror, full of the bodies of Blue-Beard's
former wives, who did the same thing she just did.
Horrified, she drops the key in the blood, but when she tries to wash it, it doesn't go away : it's a magical key. Fearing for her life, she tells her sister her husband's secret, and they plan to flee the next morning.
Unfortunately, her husband comes back sooner than expected and discovers the bloodied key.
In a blind rage, he threatens to kill her on the spot, but she asks for a last prayer with her sister.
At the last moment, her brothers arrive and kill Blue-Beard. His former wife then inherits his castle andall his riches, get her sisters married and eventually marries herself
to someone she loves, and moves on from her horrible experience with the blue-bearded man.
