Something was right in the air. Maybe it was the smell of rain, of wet pavement, or the smell of fresh flowers just bloomed from spring. Perhaps it was the new perfume that she'd bought just for this occasion. No matter the cause, she felt good. Things had been going well for Rosemary recently. She'd dyed her hair purple and the colour had turned out well, she'd started college and had gotten B's in all of her classes. And she'd met him.

He. He was the shining moment of her after-high school life. The stereotypical meeting. The immediate friendship afterwards. When she caught his eyes on her and he didn't look away. The butterfly wing touch of his fingers on her neck as he pushed away her newly-dyed hair. Everything was perfect about him.

Her nose slightly pink from the cold, she walked slowly down the road to the coffee shop that wasn't too far away from her apartment. The vaguely Italian style to the building made it feel very peaceful, which was a vibe she liked. He was going to be there. The pink on her nose spread to her cheeks at the thought.

When the bell jingled as she pushed open the door, the few people in the shop looked up at her. She gave them a tiny smile and sat down at the table by the window, which was her favourite. She didn't see him there yet, but that was okay. He must just be a little late, or she was early. She glanced at the old grandfather clock at the end of the room and saw the little hand on the two and the big hand on the thirty. She was right on time. No worries.

She checked the clock again, feeling like she'd waited a little while. Ten minutes had passed. Rosemary pulled her phone out of her pocket and sent him a text.

tick, tock.

Thirty minutes passed. She shifted restlessly, checking her phone every few seconds for a text back. He wasn't here.

tick, tock.
