I bet there are a few blogs out there about how to be a staff member, but I just want to refresh everyone about how to become a staff member and be a good one, too.
Number 1: DO NOT ASK FOR STAFF!
Unless the server you are on allows asking for staff, do NOT ask. This will lower your chances a great deal, and you will most likely NOT earn the rank that you want to get in the long run. Be patient!
Number 2: DON'T DO ANYTHING THAT WILL REFLECT BADLY ON YOUR CHANCES WHEN YOU APPLY!
If you are thinking about applying on a server that is willing to accept staff applications, don't do anything that will decrease your chances. Hacking, saying something mean about someone, disrespecting players - honestly, I could go on for a long while - or do anything that will lower your chances. If you do something that you would regret later down the line, DON'T DO IT! Otherwise, go ahead and troll that player that you don't like. ;)
Number 3: ASSIST OTHERS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!
When you are on a server that you want to become staff on, you should probably start helping out. Show the other staff members and the owner that you are fit to help around, and that you're not just a lazy bum that wants to become staff to show off and boss people around. This type of attitude will get you nowhere, so you should probably be the nicest person you could be and help others.
Number 4: BE ACCESSIBLE!
A lot of Owners on servers want their staff to be able to be contacted easily, either by Skype, Teamspeak, etc. If you want to become a staff member, try to have applications that will allow you to be contacted at a moment's notice, especially if you want to move up in rank. If you had to contact the Owner about something going on, and there was no one but you and say, a hacker, then he might be able to help you out by contacting another staff member or themselves getting on to put a stop to whatever madness is going on.
Number 5: DON'T BE A JERK! ;)
Nobody likes a snobby staff member. Period.
Number 6: KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
if the owner thinks that you're doing a great job, chances are, he'll keep you staff. As long as you don't mess up too much or wreck the entire server, you'll probably be just fine in your nice 'lil staff rank. :)
Finally, Number 7: BE FLEXIBLE!
If you end up getting demoted or put to a different rank, don't fret. As long as you stay good and you show good qualities that a staff member has - kindness, helpfulness, self-directed, etc. - then you will get back to the rank that you want in no time. Sometimes, you'll jsut have to be, as I said before, PATIENT!
