1. Allocate Minecraft More Memory

Thanks to the newly updated version of the Minecraft Launcher it is now simpler than ever to allocate Minecraft more memory. You can allocate more memory to Minecraft by clicking the "Edit Profile..." button in the bottom left of the screen when you first open Minecraft. From there you can change the value of RAM (likely to be set as 1G as default) to anything else, up to a maximum of how much RAM you have on your computer.

As you may expect 1G stands for 1GB of RAM, change this value to 2G or more to increase the amount of memory that Minecraft has to work with.

2. Installing the 64-bit of Java

64-bit Java is a newer and more powerful runtime environment for Minecraft, and it can make a big difference to the performance of your game if you have it installed.

You can download the newer version of Java by visiting this link on the official Java website. However, you will need to make sure that you are running Minecraft on a 64-bit OS before you do so.

3. Remove any Unneeded Mods & Textures

Ideally, the only mod you would ever have installed on Minecraft would be the Optifine mod, however most players will have dabbled with mods at one time or another. If you rarely use certain mods which you installed then it is definitely worth uninstalling them as your game will suffer in performance as a result.
