Hey everyone, I just wanted to talk about something that bothers me.

I see a lot of posts on PMC along the lines of o I need a servero or o Make me a server.o


The way I see it, there are two types of servers you might want:

1) A small, possibly whitelisted server just to play and build with a few friends. In this case, ito s easy to set up a vanilla or Bukkit server right from your computer, and using Hamachi is even easier. Io m not going to give full instructions, but a quick Google search will turn up plenty of tutorials on how to easily create a small server.

2) A large, public server to get many players and maybe get some donations. If this is your goal, begging for a server is even more pitiful. Youo re going to have to work to make a successful server, and that requires research and dedication. Your best bet is to find a server hosting site, start out with a small server with a cheap monthly fee, and work from there. In some aspects, using a server hosting site is even easier than making a server on your own computer.

Either way, the chances of someone making a server for you are slim. Regardless of which of the above two categories you fall into, or even a mix of both, youo re going to have to build it for yourself to be successful at all.

It just annoys me when people beg on PMC for a server when they haveno t done any research beforehand. Heck, it took me close to two years to learn about servers, make one myself, open it to the public, and tweak it to where it is today. Of course, ito s nowhere near perfection, but I try my best to get it to that point. Io m happy to share some of the knowledge Io ve learned along the way with others, but it drives me crazy to see people begging for others to do work for them.
