For starters:

Starting a server can be a very lucrative business if you approach it wisely. As both a former server owner and owner of a hosting company, I can understand its very difficult. The best thing you can do before starting is having “A plan”. This can outline what you want in a server, this is what many big server owners does before starting a server.

How to form this plan:

To form a good plan, you want to know what your server is going to be about, e.g mini games network, survival games, sky block, or everything in one.

You need to note what steps you are going to take to start this server, like who to go for mods, builds etc..

You will need to note the costs for all these people and work out a budget.

What people to contact:

All major servers use custom plugin developers for their plugins, this does cost a bit so what you can do is you can work out a bundle with your dev of your choice to get 10+ more plugins in one package. If you are on a lower budget, sticking with already built plugins is perfectly ok, if you need help with modifying these plugins, you can go to a dev and they will help you out for little or nothing, they can sort our permissions for you as a kind jester as it does not take up too much time.

Also, main server would target custom builders for their server, that would mean, they would hire a group of builders to build a spawn or built areas for people to explore, they might even build for mini games such as SG or CTF but be warned, they are fairly expensive. If you would like to put your own labour in, then its more rewording, even if you got your friends to help. Most servers would intend on keeping local..

Graphics and designers are very important for a successful server, they will be the ones to design a server banner for PMC, your website, your logo and your promotional video. I am not saying to go for all of them at once, but aim for it, they are still all costs but you can still always create your own logo, which might not be the best quality depending on your experience but it will do for the mean time, a website can be easily created on Enjin, weebly etc for very little, but you will need a domain (the web address. e.g www.planetminecraft.com) The server banner can be made on various websites, they will intend on using their own way of advertising on that banner tho.

Server hosts are the most important people when dealing with servers. You can choose to host your own server via computer but its very unreliable and complicated to manager, thats why people would go for online server hosts. The advantages around online hosting is that the server is always going to stay online.. You can decide to go with different plans that a server might offer. My company would go by "pay for GB" which means, you would pay for the memory allocation of the server. Some people would go by slots. You can also choose to order a "dedicated server" which would be 16GB and up. Major servers would be hosted on one or more which could be costing around 500 a month for them. For big enough server, they might go for a single 32GB server or a 64GB server which would be costing 150 or more, (depending on the hardware they use).. The host would include a control panel, which is where you would manage the server and access all your FTP files, e.g World, plugins, options etc.. My job revolves around online server hosting, I would be the CFO (company financial officer) so I would be into the finance side of the company. How ever, we also have technical support which would cater for yer needs. If something was to go wrong with the server, they would be able to assist ye.

When you have a plan:

Right, so you are ready to start this server when you have all your notes written up and all your people contacted and your server is up and online, you have everything built and all your plugins installed. Whats next? Advertisement is next, you are trying to market your server and get it "known". The most popular choice of advertisement is right here on planet mine craft. You will display your promo video (if you have one), your server banner and your description. What you need to say about your server is the main facts. People will always go with a server that offers the most. That could mean, absolutely no lag.. Which will be based on your GB allowance and your hard ware, your plugins, your games, staff and even denotable ranks.

Over all tips:

1. Write up your notes.

2. budget for all your contacts.

3. Choose responsible staff. Don't have too many.

4. Dont advertise your server on other servers or on other server posts!!!

5. Try and have some way of paying for your server. e.g donation system (ranks, upgrades) which can be done through your website connected to "Buy Craft" (plugin)

6. Don't have too many plugins on your server.

7. Have an easy to remember IP address. e.g play.craft.com

8. Have a voting system that offers rewards with the plugin votify.

9. Keep everything attractive. i.e Banner, PMC post, server spawn, website, video etc..

10. Ask for help from people you know and trust, no one can start a server on their own.

11. Look at other big server for inspiration But don't copy them exactly!

12. Make your server enjoyable for you and everyone els.

I hope this helps ye guys, put a comment for anything I have missed and I will make sure to add.

Good Luck!

The fact is Ender Dragon, people always pay for spawn builds. This does not signify a lazy server owner. This means he he willing to go further to provide a fun envoirnment for his/her players.

As long as I can remember, people have always commissioned build groups such as Pandoras Blocks, ABS, or Sunfury to build for them because they dont have the experience as these guys do.

Not sure why you would pay someone to build spawn, and make things other than plugins...
That almost signifies a lazy server owner who puts minimal effort into their server.
