I'm sure many of you already know how to build, but chances are you are too used to building smaller things or not needing to pay much attention to detail. So when you go to make a bigger project, or something that you're posting to PMC, you don't know quite what to do. Here're some tips and tricks that I use when I go to build:

1. Planning planning planning. So many people just start their building without a plan whatsoever, and then it never turns out right. Sketch out what you want, or maybe build a smaller model of it. The visuals will help you gauge things like sizes and positioning and will make it go a lot smoother.

2. Layout the base first. This way you can make sure you like how it's going to end up. If you don't like the basic shape of it, you won't like the end project.

3. Work your way down in sizes, build big first then small. It seems obvious, but sometimes people build the main frame, then start filling in little details instead of working their way down in size. By the time they get close to finishing, they don't have enough space for the rest of the build.

4. Play around with color schemes. I found that sometimes when I build something, I don't like the colors of it, simple as that. So I encompass the whole build in a selection in World Edit and mess around with it. For example, if I wanted to make the red wool on my carpet green, I would do //replace 35:14 35:13. The damage values specify what color to use.

5. Take frequent breaks! Some people begin building and work for hours on end. When they finish, step back, and look at it, it doesn't seem quite right. That's because they didn't look at the entire thing frequently. If you check it often, you'll notice little things you want to change, and you can change them easily.

6. Be symmetrical. Although this doesn't apply to all builds, most builds have some form of symmetry, whether it be rotational or line. If you check some of the popular projects, I bet you could find multiple symmetries in it. Using symmetry helps the brain keep everything orderly, which in turn helps you build better. If you're making an oblong house, chances are you won't like how it looks in the end.

--------

I'll be adding to this as time goes on and I learn more about building, because nobody is perfect at it. In the meantime, I hope this helps some of you get those bigger builds done and done well!
