Flight Basics

This is a brief article to help give you an idea how how to fly one of our spaceships. Although they come in many shapes and sizes and many are completely rebuilt or customised by their owners this will give you the basic idea of how to use the standard controls. If you're saying to yourself "I know all this, I've used Ships before" then stop right there buster! this is not the normal Ships plugin we're talking about here .... keep reading.

Our version of this plugin can be played by anyone. You require no mods, plugins, spout, forge etc ... vanilla will do nicely!

Thats not to say that having a mod like a minimap would not be an advantage; the compass and markers are superb tools for space.

Topics Covered:

By the end of this blog you will be able to:
  • Fly a SpaceShip around in space
  • Land on a planet
  • Enter the HyperSpace dimention and get back
  • Use a Cargo Hold
  • Use an Enderman Zapper
  • Navigate space
  • Build and "tune" keys and Beam Up Devices (BUD).
  • Fire ships cannons.

Basic Flight controls

There are some basic flight controls in your cockpit. These are simple to use. Here is a table of the controls and how to use them.
  • Thruster - right click to use. Moves ship in direction of sign 3 blocks. Not for moving any real distance.
  • Altitude - right cilck moves up, left click moves down.
  • Wheel - Right click rotate right, left click rotates left.
  • Main Drive - right click to use - moves ship by 5x the amount of running engines you have in the direction of the sign.
  • EOT - Right click switches it on and off. Moves ship automaticly every few secs a distancedependant on your engines.
  • Jump drive - right click with a diamond (its fuel) to activate. The distance traveled is a large number based on the number of engines you have powered up.

Landing on a planet

Locate a planet you wish to land on using the website (the interactive map). The sign to interact with your Landing Computer is labeled LAND. The landing computer has 3 options. You change the selection with the right mouse button and you select an option with the left mouse button.
  • SCAN - Check for a planet within range.
  • deORBIT/LAND - Land on the planet that you are currently above.
  • ORBIT - Take off from a planet and position you in orbital relative cor-ordinates.

Entering the Hyperspace Dimention

Hyperspace is a recently discovered dimention of space. You can enter and leave it using a hyperspace drive (or hyperdrive). When you are in hyperspace/subspace your ship will move at twice the distance on main drive or EOT.

Make sure your Hyperdrive has fuel in (ender-pearls) and that your HyperCore is powered.

The drive will not initially use hyperfuel to get into hyperspace but it will use one unit to return to normal space. But you should always carry extra fuel, both hyperfuel and standard ships fuel.

Right clicking the Hyper sign will "charge" it causing it to turn red.

Once charged and that you have all the fuels you need simply right click again to engage the drive. The drive will not turn yellow/green again until the ship has returned to normal space.

Using the Cargo Hold

The Cargo Hold is just a sign that you right click on. Most ships only support one main hold but large ships can have more, depending on the amount of engines.

Using the ZAP Generator

This sign is an off/on style sign. When in the ON position it will "fire" every 10 secs. All endermen within range will receive damage and get set on fire. The range, damage delt and duration of fire depends on the amount of engines you have installed and are switched on.

Navigation

Navigating space can be a challenge unless you follow a few principals.
  • Know where you are.
  • Know where you want to go.
  • Have 'some' idea how much fuel you need. (but always carry more, you can always stop off on an asteroid and collect more. Coal is abundant in space)
  • Know how to access the website.

By visiting our main webpage you can use the map to select a destination (unless you are mining asteroids in which case you can go anywhere, space is filled with them). Once you know and have made a note of the cords of your destination you are almost ready to start traveling.

The next thing you need to know is where you are, if you have a client map mod (eg: Rei's minimap) then this is easy, infact a map mod is perfect for space. If you dont have one then most ships come with compass and location signs, or you can just push F3.

The last step is ... fly there, you are simply trying to get your coordinates to match that of your destination.

Extra Hardware

The two items we will look at here are Beam Up Devices (BUD) and ShipKey.

Both of these are made from a golden apple which you can buy from ASC station (Akra Space Core). Once you have them you will need to turn them into hardware, simply rename them on an anvil, with one of these names.

BUD = BeamUpDevice

Key = ShipKey

Once you have created them you should take them to your ship to "tune" them. At this point you should alreadt "own" your ship, that is having registered your ship and have a serial number for it. If not do this now by right clicking the Ship sign.

The BUD will allow you to Beam Up to your ship when you right click it (a block must not be selected). When you tune your BUD it will set its transport location where you stand in relation to the ship sign, and will track with the ship as it moves.

The key can be used by anyone to lock or unlock your ship. Only the owner can do this without a key.

Ship Cannons

The ships cannons come in various flavours, you will need to check the ship datasheet to work out which type of cannon is fitted to your ship. As standard this will be either a 'normal' or Medium cannon.

You simply right click the sign to fire the cannons. All powered guns fitted to your ship will fire. This allows you to enable or disable guns individually. The ammo should be in your inventory but not in your hand.

Your ship can hold any number of cannons, but you must have active engines on your ship or the recoil will push you backwards. The more guns the more you will be pushed backwards. To clarify;

recoil = gun_count - engine_count

It should be noted here that if you land on a planet the ships controls will reduce in power, EOT, Jump, HyperDrives will also disable themselves until you go for an orbital launch. This is because generating a warp field whilst in the gravitational field of a planet.

Also If you are flying in space and you take a hit, you will loose the ability to fly, for this reason in space its best to keep a tuned BUD on your belt (Thats what we call the quick itembar)
