The Adventure of A Girl In The Forest Page 9

When George woke up the sun wasn’t far from setting and everything was quiet and peaceful. It was apparently Harper’s turn to be on watch, as she lay stretched outside the door absorbing the day’s final rays. George tentatively put the tip of one of her fingers in the sunlight. She immediately drew it back into her new water cloak. It was singed, barely but still. The hottest days of summer were yet to come.
Deep breaths George, deep breaths. Just take it all one step at a time. George carefully shifted her weight until she was sitting up, and reached for her pack.

She rummaged through it looking for anything she could wrap around her hands and wrists. The only thing she found suitable for that purpose, however, was the sterile gauze she had in the medical kit. Even if she went home to get more supplies, they didn’t have any more gauze back at the house. Best to just wait for nightfall. George could find her way along the trail home blind if she needed to. But she wouldn’t be blind this time, no, this time the moon would be showing her the way. Well, if she was patient enough to wait for it.

George, however, was not a patient person by nature and instead drew her cloak tightly around herself. The sun might be bright, but as long as she kept all her various appendages tucked cozily underneath her watery cloak she would be fine. So George stepped out of her shelter into the sunlight. It was tempting to try and block the sun’s rays with her hand, but she refrained from doing so. Instead, she turned with her back facing the sun so she could see.

“Don’t you think it would be wiser to wait till nightfall?” Harper questioned.

“I think the better question is how much time am I willing to waste waiting on it to show up,” George replied.

“How did you ever learn to fish with that impatience of yours,” Harper sighed, shaking her head.

“Simple, I do other things while I wait for the string to catch it for me,” George teased.

“Now where was I? Oh yes, I’m going back to the house to grab some stuff. I need you, Gary, and Rocky to stay here and hold down the fort,” George instructed.

  “Can I come?”Harper inquired.

“No, Angel insists she can only smell the person who is following us. Your keen sense of smell will be better used here,” George insisted.

“So Angel gets to come and I don’t,” Harper replied indignantly.

“This time yes, but I’m also taking Twitter with me,” George stated matter of factly, then added consolingly, “besides your not exactly the most stealthy of us here.”

  “Your right,” Harper huffed.

“Did I miss somthin’ important?” Rocky questioned sleepily.

“Glad your up, I need to make a quick trip up to the house,” George informed him.

“Alright, but make it quick,” Rocky replied groggily.

“I don’t expect anything especially exciting to happen while I’m gone, but be prepared for anything,” George cautioned Harper and Rocky, “and try not to wake up Gary.”

“Come on Twitter, I wanna be back by dusk!” George called over her shoulder as she started on the trail.

Twitter caught up quickly and resumed her usual perch on George’s shoulder. Her presence was oddly comforting. The ramifications of the fact that Goerge could understand her animal friends had not fully registered yet. She had always felt she could understand animals, the fact that they talked now was not completely strange. The Cave, however, was too strange to be a conjuring of her imagination and her adverse reaction to sunlight was quite real.

George let out an exasperated sigh and decided to leave the matter alone for now. It was no use pondering what she could not rationalize. Instead, she focused on the forest, how the trees seemed to whisper to one another. How some looked like they were holding hands, while others seemed to be disgusted by one another and left a hole in the forest canopy. They all seemed curious as to her presence as if they were crowding around to witness a strange spectacle. Their shade was cool like the water of the lake, but it was refreshing like a fountain.

The further she went down the trail the more she seemed to become one with the forest. The animals no longer hid from her, but as a whole seemed more inclined to ignore her. Mist started to accumulate where she walked. It trailed ahead of her playfully, creating shapes and images until it finally settled on one in particular. Memories of George’s times at the lake sprung to life as the mist danced along the trail. Many of them she remembered fondly, but there was a strange rendition a boy about her age, slightly older played in the shadows. He left strange messages in the sand and odd creations of twigs and leaves underneath the trees.

George couldn’t help but smile. She might not remember the boy being there, but she remembered what he left behind. George remembered him fondly, though she had never seen him nor knew his name. He was simply her invisible friend to her. George’s parents had grounded her from the lake for a considerable time after she finally told them about her invisible friend. They were stern and cross with her for what seemed like no reason whatsoever.

George had snuck out after dark that same night and, with the help of the moonlight, made her way back to the lake. By the time she got there, she was in tears. She had hardly explained her plight when she heard her parents calling in the distance. She had looked out at the empty air hoping for answers, a way to stay. All that was left her were drag marks and tears cast in the sand and the distant shouting of her parents.

Just as a tear had slid down her cheek the wind had whispered to her, “You and I will meet again here someday.”
