Alright, I don't know about anybody else, but I'm sick an tired of all these Griefing Blogs, saying "How can you sleep at night knowing you are doing this!?!?" or "You are terrible people"
Seriously though, shut up, It's your fault this is happening to you and I went out to prove this.
I've actually got tired of all these idiots posting these griefing blogs, telling about how griefers go onto any server and search out the area to grief anything, so I'm going to disprove this, and prove how easy the Minecraft Community makes it to Grief.
Site #1: Your Normal Average Survival Server
This is the type of server where most of the Griefings occur, so I went onto this server to investigate.
This is the spawn, it's alright, nothing special.
Here's the rules. As you can see, NO GRIEFING is Rules #1
Now I get on ready to build and stuff, when i see a guy building a wooden house, I ignore it and continue on, about 5 - 10 minutes later, i see him shouting on chat "SOMEONE GRIEFED MY HOUSE!!!" So an admin goes over to his house, I asked if i could come and he tped me there too. So the griefed starts talking the normal whinny bullcrap, "uhhh my house was griefed idk why, You should feel bad for me! blah blah im stupid poo poo pee pee".
Here's the griefed house, looks like fire damage and the rain probably put it out.
I don't know why the admin did this, but I think it is one of the awesomest things an admin has done, He looks around the house to see if he can find the Griefer's hideout, and I'm not even joking, he sees the spawn literally like 50 blocks away from the house. and he says and I quote "No, you built right next to the spawn area, you were asking to be griefed" And just to prove I'm not lieing
I'm on the top of the house and you can see the stonebrick and cobble spawn in the distance...
There is one instance of where the player is at fault.
Site #2: Another Average Survival Server
Found another survival server and decided to check it out.
So some guy on the server, asked the server if someone wanted to live with him and help out in building his house. This is fine, but here's the doosy, He posted his house coordinates onto the global chat...
I swear this is like some new breed of stupidity....
So I'm like, this is too good to pass up, so I journey to the coordinates posted onto the chat, and I gotta say, he must have been using some part of his brain because his house was pretty far away and in the desert.
It actually looked like a nice house, I almost felt bad for griefing it.
Few things to say about these next few pictures, 3 careful places of tnt did this damage, and I gotta say, I'm pretty proud of what I've done!
Hey, I'd say it has a great view now :D, And yes, I took the melon and pumpkin seeds.
Done With The Rant Part, Now Here's How You Can Protect Your Stuff!
Here's 2 builds I've done where I have never gotten griefed/raided
Here is a building that I made on a factions server a little while back, I haven't been on this server in 2 weeks and my base is the exact same condition it is now, items and all. Note: This is underground barely 15 blocks from the surface.

The Main Part and the chest room!
Guess how many times this has been griefed? Once? Twice? Try never...
It didn't even take that long to make, maybe 1 - 2 hours of work depending on how big you want it
And when you are doing this, make sure it's pretty far away.
Now Now, I know what you are thinking,
"I want to have a scenic view of the surface! That base you made is ugly!"
Well have no fear, here's a base for youoOiuuUu!
Call it what you want, ugly, stupid, I assure you, this base is 99.999999999999999999999999% Ungriefable on a faction server, why factions? Lemme explain...

Allow me to explain how to construct such a building of extreme awesomeness:
Step 1: Go on a factions server: This only works on a faction server, anywhere else it just looks dumb.
Step 2: Find a big body of water:
Step 3: Gather supplies, such as Wood, Glass, Cobble, and anything else you might want to use as a building material: It's better to get more than you need rather than risk not getting enough.
Step 4: Build your base: Read further down to get more info V
Step 4A: Claim the land around you, I recommend only claiming one or two pieces of land, makes the job more manageable.
Step 4B: Find the dimensions of the claimed land and leave a one block perimeter around the walls of your base: This sounds confusing, but trust me it's simplier than you think, find the edge of the claimed land, meaning the spot where your land meets the wilderness, go onto that spot of your land, and leave that space open, meaning that say if you built your walls like that, there should be a one block perimeter around your base.
Step 4C: Build from that perimeter upward to as high as you want! Don't go too high, because that will make the job take longer and leave more time where people can come in and kill you, 2 - 3 floor is recommended. Each floor should be about 4 blocks high.
Step 4D: Once you get the building to the height you want, roof it off, and grab some water buckets and begin pouring water ALL OVER your roof, you dont want to leave any spots empty! Leaving a spot empty means there is a spot where tnt and fly down and hit your base making a hole! Remember that Water nullifies TNT Damage!
Congrats! You have made an epic ungreifable base.
Sorry for no pictures but honestly that wasn't the point, the point was that you shouldn't be complaining whinning or anything if you get griefed. You can get mad, rage, whatever, but that won't get your creation back. Just remember that admins are there to help, and also learn from the griefing, if you got griefed then obviously you did something wrong and you need to correct that!
Also if your house was above ground it was probably ugly.

The thing "it's your fault" neglects to consider is that many (most?) of the people playing minecraft are CHILDREN.
This post is like saying "it's your fault the bully kicked your castle down, because you made it out of SAND on the BEACH, dumbass!" or to use another analogy - probably more apt - it's like "slut-shaming" rape victims. "You shouldn't have been in that place dressed like that".
Argue all you like, justify it however you want, it's wrong, and reflects poorly on the perpetrator.
That said, I have no expectation that it'll ever stop, or that people will ever stop justifying wrongdoing by blaming the victim. People are people and unless human nature changes drastically this kind of garbage will continue indefinitely.
Of course, those doing the griefing are also children (regardless of age), so meh.
