Now, I know most servers are hosted by some good server hosting providers, but some people just don't want to pay. Some people will use No-Ip.org to host their server, some use hamachi. But there's good and bad to homemade servers other than getting a provider.

I'm not saying making your own server is necessarily wrong and never should be done, but you need to think of your

computer. First off, you need enough RAM to run the server. Probably a computer with 4GB RAM can run a moderate server, Maybe some lag with 2 or 3. You'd need to run Minecraft AND the server together on one computer, so it will lag the server if you don't have enough RAM to give. A method I used to use was to use my laptop and host my server there. It'd work fine and had minor lag.

Hamachi is different. People only use hamachi for two reasons. 1. They didn't buy the game. or 2. They just want to make a small server for a couple of friends. People have their reasons. Hamachi is a VPN software (Virtual Private Networking) that allows you to create small networks of 5 for the free version. Hamachi is slower though and does cause some server lag. This isn't guaranteed, but depending on your stats, and possibly the number of players, it can lag your server.

Port Fowarding:
Instead of using Hamachi, I'd suggest you port foward your router. Port fowarding basically opens up a path with a port you give and allows people to connect to that port with your IP address. You can use No-IP.org so others can connect to a hostname rather than your IP address. (ex: lolminecraftserver.no-ip.org) Port fowarding is a pain in the beginning, but I will shortly make a tutorial on how to do that for people who may not know.

Laggy Servers:
If you've been on a server before, you've experienced server lag atleast once. It's quite irritating when it's frequent, and you can barely do anything when the server lags. Tip: If you look in the console and it keeps saying

[WARNING] Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded?

Then you know you have a problem. There actually is a way to change how much RAM is going into your server.
I'm pretty sure (to the best of my memory) you create a .txt file and type:
java -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar
(I'm sure it's that)
1024M is 1024 Megabytes, you can tweak the number of RAM to allocate. But that's all you.
That's enough with this little rant. I just wanted to say:
If you have a server and you know it lags terribly, please, don't post them. There are many tricks you can find and once you settle down and it's fine, upload it, it's torture playing on a laggy server.
EDIT: How to Port-Foward and play for FREE without hamachi here.
