Yes, I know, I made a mistake on the thumbnail of the image, don't need to point that out. That is a noobish mistake.
Okay, let's get started, in this post, I will be covering how to not make mistakes on your minecraft server. This
is aimed to help you and your server run decently.

Okay, so permissions are bloody useful! But, do not fall into the trap of making the rookie mistake of letting your server allow your players to execute the command /pl or /plugins (which shows the list of plugins you have). This is a very common mistake, people will know some of your plugins (For example, nolagg) if you have that people might come to know that you have it. This is important because, about a while back, there was something called a dupe glitch, this involved having NoLagg, It allowed the users to basicly dupe items that they put into a chest, I am not going to tell you how this is done, as I don't want people who cannot play legit on minecraft.

Epic spawn!

Okay, so when I join a server, the first thing I judge is the spawn, if it's an ugly spawn which looks like a 5 year old did in worldedit and slapped a few blocks down, I leave, I know that this server has a very small amount of effort put into, also do not, do not, do not, I can't stress this enough, add signs in spawn. 1) It makes it look ugly. 2) People won't even read them, I've monitored my new players with vanishnopacket, most of who join the game don't even bother reading the rules, instead, configure essentials to run the command '/rules' when a new player joins. I know this is possible, I've done it before.

Protection plugin (not mandatory)

This one isn't compulsory, meaning: you don't need it! For e.g. Why the hell would you need a protection plugin on a faction/raid server?!

This one (If you do not tolerate grief on your server); can save you a lot of players from leaving the game, protection plugins include: PreciousStones (This allows players to place a block, and it protects a certain area which can be configured in your config).

Rollback plugins are useful too, say if someone you trust gets OP, and he betrays you and griefs your server, rollback will save you here! You can use CoreProtect, LogBlock, HawkEye (I used this one before, the database file got over 6gb)

I recommend you use a free database for this will not crowd your space on the server your minecraft server is running on. db4free.net dominates here, as they are very good. They provide you with a free database that you can use for your rollback plugin, although here is the catch: They can take away your database without notice & Their hardware can always go down, but I used them, and not once it did. But, I suggest you download the database file to your computer, so if something goes wrong, you're safe.

Have a good choice of plugins!

TIP: Why use hamachi? It lags, just port forward, if you cannot port forward, I suggest you download Simple Port Forward, as it port forwards for you the download for it is http://www.simpleportforwarding.com/download ,
here is a tutorial by the one and only ScMowns2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU46aBzdFlk.

Whatever you do, please don't have an overload of plugins, for example, I was working in a server hosting company once, the client said "Why is my CPU and ram always hitting it's peak which is 100% and crashing when I start it up", well something was wrong with this guy, he only had 257 mb of ram, and he had 40 plugins with 6 worlds! (creative, creative_nether, creative_the_end, survival, survival_nether, survival_the_end).

I had to be honest here, I told him that he was abusing his CPU and ram usage, as too many plugins and worlds for a server with such a small amount of ram had been running.

Good plugins:
WorldEdit, WorldGuard, Essentials, Pex or GroupManager, iConomy or other economy plugins, Votifier (This helps your server get popular by rewarding the players when they vote), FakePlayersOnline (This basicly fakes the amount of players a player sees online on the tabs list and when joining a server, this makes them believe that the server is popular, and thus when it is popular more people join, come on, who the hell here wants to join an unpopulated server?

There are a lot more I can go on listing, but who cares? There are plenty of other PMC blog posts explaining this you can google.

Thank you for taking the time and reading this boring or maybe not so boring article that I've spent my time working on from my experience of working with other servers. If any of you guys have an idea, please post it as I would love to write about it!
