So if you just downloaded minecraft and it is lagging first-
Check your render distance keep it at medium
Check your graphics if they're at fancy change the to fast
Play on flatland before you play normally
If your on a server -
Too many people
WiFi problems
That's all I've found to help me with personal experience feel free to comment any other ways you found out yourself.

Also:
- Task Manager -> right click : java. blah blah with a lot of memories put into it -> high
- Get the mod optifine and optimize Minecraft
- Allocate more RAM to Minecraft

There are 2 different kinds of lag.
"Client Lag" is where your FPS (frames per second) drops to a low number, such as 7 or 8, and that's when your screen starts to "stick" or "jump around".
"Server" or "network" lag is where the server host cannot hold many players on a server at one time, which means the RAM is spread out to more players that it can handle, and you have less RAM, meaning you will get "connection" lag. E.g. breaking a block, 2 seconds after it reappears then disappears.
