Hey there, thanks for clicking on this! It means a lot! Today, i'll be showing you how to make a minecraft themed thumbnail for your youtube channel! Enjoy!
Step 1. Downloads
Of course, your going to need to download a few bits-and-bobs first! I recommend downloading gimp! It's a great photo editer, and it's absolutely free! It doesn't take up much space at all!
Step 2. Creating new project on gimp
Once you've downloaded gimp, click on "File" in the top left and then click "New". When it pops up, change the 640 part to 1280, then change the 400 part to 720, this is the best quality for youtube thumbnails. When you've done that, click OK.
Step 3. Assert Google!
Go onto google and find a great background, type into google images, Shaders Mod Minecraft. Then it should come up with summin like this...
Now, once you have found your desired background, save it onto your computer in a file that you can easily find. Such as pictures.
Step 4. Putting the background into Gimp.
In gimp, you cant paste pictures in, so what you need to do is go to "File" in the top left, and click on "Open as layers". Find your background, then click "Open". When it opens, it should fill up the canvas, if for some reason it hasn't done that, click the "Scale tool" from the tool box. Then line it up to the size of your canvas.
Step 5. The Skin!
In your picture, your probably going to want your minecraft skin in it. If not, skip this step! Go onto novaskins and find your skin. *if you've made your skin there, if you haven't, skip this step* Once you have your skin, click on the "Pose" button and pose your character to it's desired position. When you have done this, click on the camera button on the top. When the screenshot comes up, right click it and save it. Put it in a file that's easy to get to.
Step 6. Getting the skin into gimp
Use the same instructions as the background step.
Step 7. Get some text!
Go onto Text Craft, a nifty little minecraft text generator, then once you have made your text, save that.
Step 8. Getting text in.
Do the same as step 6 and 4.
Step 9. On gimp, click "File" then click "Export as". Call it what you want, save it in a file that will be easy to get to. Then you are done!
Post in comments if you want me to do another tutorial! If soo, what about!
THANKS!

Allow me to explain because i so happen to be an expert on this subject!
What makes a good thumbnail is deciding what you want to be the real eyecatcher, your thumbnail example is quite dismissable and fairly basic if you ask me, now i admit i'm no pro but studying Art and Disign i think it could be better, instead of a minecraft related background maybe have a wall of blocks, maybe Stonebrick. With that you have a gray canvas to work on, text is vital aswell because it tells the story of what the video is about, the text on the example is quite small and if it were a thumbnail and seen on Youtube it would be hard to read. I'd recomend making the text alot more bigger and colourful with different colours that stands out from the background. Animations are good too when they look slik, you seem to have done that fairly well in your example and like the text, could be made bigger because it shows You, the player on the thumbnail so the image cries "Hey guys, It's me here!"
Just a little bit of advice, don't take the negitives personally.
