CHAPTER THREE

I woke up the next morning, getting about 3 hours of sleep. My Dad and I drove to where the launch would be taking place, nothing was said in the car. It took just over an hour to get there, however it didn’t feel like long. We walked inside the large building, the roof being a dome of glass. Everything was white and gray, colors of that sort. We walked towards a large room, up a small metal staircase where inside there were a large amount of computers and technological equipment, some of which I didn’t even know what it was.

“Good Morning, Faelyn. Are you ready to start?” A man walked up to me, shaking my hand.

“Yes, Sir.” I nodded and followed him into a room behind a sealed door.

The ceilings were high, I knew where we were. This was a training room, I could tell from the equipment inside and the fact I had been on the majority of everything there. He took me even further, through another door which had a metal lift, leading to another door.

“Where are we going?” I finally asked, curious.

“To check out where you will be for the next year and a half and get your suit.” He said, continuing to walk while briefly looking back at me. I nodded to him.

Using the lift, we were brought up to the door in which the man used a hand scanner to open. We walked across a large metal platform to the capsule. He gestured with his hand for me to go in front of him and open it. I opened the door, which was decently heavy, and looked inside. Inside wasn’t as small as I thought it would be, so that was some portion of relief.

“You can step inside.” He assured me, giving a short smile.

“Alright.” I nodded and bent down, slipping in.

“Everything you need is inside here, eventually, about 6 months into your trip, you’ll be taken to the ISS where you will be able to conduct more research with them there.” He explained.

“Gotcha, and you’ll be able to contact me through here?” I pointed to a control panel to the side with a small screen in the center.

“Yes, Ma’am. We will be contacting you quite frequently.”

I nodded and continued to look around, already knowing where things were. I had been shown months before in a simulator on what it would be like, where things were, how to run things and some of what no gravity would feel like. We eventually left after a bit and walked back down to where my Dad was, who was talking to one of the people there.

“Is it nice in there?” He stopped and walked over to me.

“Bigger than I thought it would be, so that’s a relief.” I shrugged, forcing a smile.

“That’s good then.” He nodded.

“I have to follow him to get a suit.” I gestured to the man I had been following around.

“Alright then, see you soon.” He hugged me briefly.

I followed him into another part of the back, where there was a large amount of white colored space suits. I was shown one that had been made for me, looked just like the others. Nothing really needed to be gone over, since I had been taught the majority of everything I needed to know. Seeing it; the capsule, suit and the control center, made me feel less worried about what was going to happen. I walked back to where my Dad was waiting, I walked over to him and stood next to him, unsure what to do.

“The launch will be in about an hour, once we finish a couple last minute things.” The man said. I didn’t know his name nor what his role in this was but I decided to just go with it.

About twenty minutes went by before it was time to actually start preparing the launch. I hugged my Dad and he hugged me back. I didn’t want to leave him, yet I wanted to do the research that I was being sent for.

“Love you, Dad.”

“Love you, Fae. I’ll be here.” He said, smiling at me.

I walked away with another, different person and waved to my Dad walking backwards. I was shown back to the capsule and got inside, the door was closed on me. I sat down in the seat and put on the multiple strapped seat belts that would keep me held to the seat as I left the atmosphere. The screen on the dashboard flickered on, showing the entire room of the control center where I had just been. I waved to my dad, who was waving at me. I clutched my silver-chain cross necklace, subconsciously wanting to hold onto something. I looked around, making sure everything looked normal.

“Ready to go, Fae?” Someone said, it had some static to it but I was still able to hear.

“Yep.” I said, however, not so sure.

The metal stands holding up the capsule dropped to the side slowly and the engine turned on.

“LIft off in 5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1..”

Flames came out from the bottom of the capsule and rocketed towards space, I closed my eyes, honestly too afraid to look at what was going on. The screen panel was currently black, but I didn’t know if it had turned on mid-launch or not. I had been told this would only last about 2-3 minutes before I exited Earth’s atmosphere, but I felt like forever. It was extremely loud and the force of the speed the capsule was going at pushed against me, it felt as if I was being flattened against the seat. Then suddenly, everything lightened and gravity lifted off of me.

“Fae? Come in Fae?” The screen popped on as someone spoke through the radio.

“Hello!” I waved, unsure what else to say.

“Oh thank God!” My Dad said in the background, I laughed.

“Hi Dad, I’m okay! There is no gravity!” I gave him a thumbs up.

“Glad you’re okay!” He said.

I heard someone muttering in the background, I tried to listen in however I couldn’t hear it, it was too quiet. They spent a few minutes, chatting quietly in the background.

“Sir, you might need to come take a look at this.” The man walked away to join my Dad and the other person who had been chatting.

“Uhh.. Is everything alright?” I asked.

“There may be some power complications..”

“Like.. the electricity?”

“Yes, Faelyn. We are trying to resolve it from here, please give us a few moments and stay in contact with us. If something happens to the screen, pick up the black box in the storage unit and contact us back.” They explained, I was now starting to worry.

I could hear some typing and a few short sentences, but nothing else. I waited there in almost complete utter silence, anticipating something to happen. My mind went straight to what I had been taught in training, hoping to remember anything that could help me if something were about to happen. Worrying wasn’t going to help so this was the best thing I could do.

Power surges are uncommon in our capsules and spacecrafts, however it still can happen Fae.. If it does, you must try to reboot the power and troubleshoot it. It is uncommon it will be a complete drain or outage, which will allow the system to try and spark the electricity back on in the capsule..

I thought of being in the simulator, the simulation instructor talking to me in a radio headset. I felt a bit better, now knowing what to do if it were about to go out.

“Faelyn, the electricity is starting to fail. We are going to have you troubleshoot it before it completely crashes.” A white-dressed man appeared within view.

“Alright, give me a few moments.” I shut off the screen using the control panel.

I unbuckled myself for the first time and lightly kicked off the chair to ‘swim’ over to the source of the electrical power, similar to an electrical box. I started to do what I had been taught, resulting in the power completely shutting off and sparking to turn back on as things slowly flickered back to life. I strapped myself back into the chair and attempted to reconnect with the control team.

“Hello? Did it work?” I called, hoping and praying for a response.

“It seems to be stabilizing. We should be okay for now.” Someone said,

“Phew.” I sighed with relief.

I sat there for a few moments. Then suddenly, everything flickered off. The screen, lights, and I could hear the freezer turn off. The engine did as well.

“Hello?! Hello??!” I said loudly, in a panic.

The screen started, however nothing came through. The capsule’s engine failed and I was now slowly floating off track.

“This can’t be happening, can’t be happening, can’t be happening.” I repeated over and over to myself, my worst fears were coming true.

I unstrapped myself and started to try to restart the power. It would spark, yet nothing would come on. Enough food and water was in here for months at a time, yet it would most likely only last a couple of days without the freezer working. But that was the least of my concerns, the air was currently not working and was using the last resort, as well as the panel and engine not working, I was completely cut off from communication and I was floating in endless space. It was starting to get stuffy inside the capsule and that was panicking me even more. I opened one of the storage lockers and put a mask around my mouth and nose hooked to an oxygen tank. This would last multiple hours so that problem was solved. I sat back down and strapped myself down, feeling some sense of safety once buckled in. I attempted to get the control panel to turn back on, and it did for a split second.

“Fae?! Hello?” Someone said through the split seconds that it would come back on in static.
