Hi there!
Ito s a common thing to feel an emotion whilst listening to a song; ito s a normal human reaction to music. But why is this? Any musical person reading this now will be thinking o Obvious. Because the way a song is written. If ito s in a minor key and softer, then it will make you sad. If ito s upbeat, loud and in a major key it will make you happy.o My question is why does a minor key make a song sadder? Why does playing loudly make a song feel more upbeat and happy?
Listen to this:
Two Steps from Hell-Heart of Courage
When I listen to this I feel like a mountain is a mole hill, I feel like 100 miles is 10. If I was blind I can now see a person dropping a needle from the other side of the valley, and if I was deaf I can now hear the needle hit the ground.
But that brings me back. Why is this? I understand that the major key lifts you, and when the gradual layering into those voices at the end is what makes me feel like I can run 1000 miles in a day. But under all that, under all the feelings and the thoughts that run through our head when listening to a song, there is some sort of link that makes us feel how we do. Is it a link back to the origin of humans? An early stage in the evolution of man? Or if youo re religious, maybe a G__ created humans like that, and it was never explained?
But take a chew on this:
Skrillex ft Sirah-Bangarang
I hate this song. I hate Skrillex. I find the intro the most irritating piece of music. Yet when I walk away from it, I cano t help myself from humming it, and on top of that giving my head a little bob to it. And when it hits the drop, I cano t help it but bob my head to the beat of the music even though I want to destroy the music. Maybe ito s the name of Skrillex that I dono t like? I know that I dislike Skrillex, so anything that Skrillex has made that I listen to I will dislike. Or is it the link? Maybe under all that hatred of the song and the wanting to turn it off, something sparks that link, which makes me feel happy and calm. Some of you now will be thinking, o Surely if a song makes you happy, then you like it.o And maybe I do, but the name of Skrillex annoys me so much that anything with that name attached to it I dislike.
This makes me think that to find a song you truly like you must listen to it without knowing the name or artist. A song from a small artist could then sound as good as a big nameo ¦
So my point is 'Do we ever truly enjoy a song?'
Thank you for reading and post your thoughts below.
