Hey everyone, this is Frankelen here. I'm a Minecraft youtuber who has recently found the Planet Minecraft community, and I've decided to start writing several blogs around here. Feel free to look at my channel, link below.

Before you read this blog, I want to make something very clear to everyone:

This blog is my opinion. I am not stating a fact. I am not telling you what to think or what to believe. My opinion is what I think, and even if you don't agree, I still have the right to my opinion. And you have the right to yours. That is why I’m encouraging you to write your opinion in the comments section below, or respond with a blog and link it. If I see any misinformed comments, I'm just going to ignore them. If you can’t be bothered to read my entire blog, I can’t be bothered to take your comments seriously. Thank you.

Recently on PMC, there have been a lot of blogs about “proper grammar and speech” in Minecraft. In Minecraft chats, Minecraft posts, generally everywhere, people complain that others don’t speak properly and don’t use correct grammar, and it “annoys” them. One blog was put out called “I’ve had enough” or something of the sort, I honestly can’t remember. It basically said that people can speak however they want to in Minecraft because it isn’t English class, and that you shouldn’t be judged for making grammatical/spelling errors. A different blog, called “Why Can’t People Speak Properly” stated the exact opposite, saying that people should speak properly in Minecraft, and it is annoying to read grammatical errors when playing Minecraft or reading Minecraft blogs.

My opinion is that we have to find a balance between these two opinions. First of all, let’s think about what the word “communication” means. Because that’s all we’re trying to do here right? When I type a message into chat on a Minecraft server, I do so because I want others to read it and understand it. If others do not understand my message, it was a waste of my time to write it, and a waste of their time for them to attempt to read it.

Let’s give a few examples. Imagine someone comes onto a server and says this:

“hey guys. h0ws it going? Its good 2 finaly play some Minecraft again. Its been awhile.”

This is not perfect grammar or spelling. In fact, it is far from it. But, you can still understand the message (unless English is your second language or you don’t speak English, which is a completely different matter). Minecraft isn’t English class. You don’t need to have perfect grammar or spelling to have someone understand your message (which is the point of writing messages).

On the other hand,  if someone comes onto a server and says this:

“ei guz, 0wz it going/ iz gud ti finelly pley sum miencrarft. I hevet played 4 evar”

Most people cannot understand this message. Even if they do, it takes longer to decipher this message than needed. (Obviously this message is over exaggerated, but believe it or not, some people type and write like this). Writing like this negates the whole purpose of writing, not just in Minecraft, but in real life as well. If you speak to someone, and they cannot understand what you’re saying, what’s the point of saying anything at all?

This is why I say that we should have a balance. Obviously the better grammar and spelling, the easier it is to read, and overall the less time spent, but perfect grammar is not needed. That doesn’t mean type like the person did in the example above, just know that you don’t have to be perfect. When you type like the person in the second example, people let you know how annoying it is. They do that because let’s be honest, when someone overcrowds you with messages you can’t read, it can get a little annoying. And when they start complaining, it just leads to arguments. And no one wants arguments, right?

And just a note to the people that do correct others for incorrect spelling and grammar: I sympathize with you when people write with incorrect grammar and spelling, trust me, I have felt the same way as you before. But when you can read and understand a message, please, please, please don’t criticize people. Because THAT is what’s really annoying. All anyone wants to do in this community is have fun, and when you start arguments it’s not fun.

To those of you who will comment “OMG dude, you forgot the apostrophe in one of your sentences. HYPOCRITE! adlhaiuvhcnvmasfiuaygihdlkjan!” I realize that I’m not perfect. This post may have dozens of grammatical and spelling errors but that is beside the point because you can understand everything I’m saying. At least I hope you can.

Thanks for reading. If you want me to write a blog about a specific topic that you want, please leave a comment.
