PvPing in minecraft is unlike many other games because of how flexible the game lets you be while PvPing.
In most RPG games you will stand in one place being forced to use timed assaults and weapons.
In minecraft you can move around as much as you want,
dodge attacks and use a whole variety of weapons to your advantage.
Some things to consider before even going into battle.
Potions
With the new 1.0.0 full release there have been many new updates to PvP.
Two of the main ones are potions and armor boosts.
In 1.0.0 there are now a whole variety of potions at your hand that can be used any time during a battle.
Some of them are very resource consuming, and can't always be used, but others are very worth it.
Damage potions allow you to throw your potion at enemies and damage 1-many of them at once. This damage will go through all armor. It is a great thing to use when your opponent is at low life for a faster kill.
Another potion type is poison potions. These are also throwable, and can cause considerable damage to your enemy very fast. The one down side to this potion is that it cannot kill you enemy.
If you use these with damage potions it will be a hard match to beat.
A last type of potion that will really affect you is health potions. These potions can, when used properly with damage and poison, make you unstoppable.
The best way to use health potions to your best advantage is to use them when you have about 3 hearts left or so, as it will give you health, and will keep giving you health.
Armor
With the new update Iron armor and Diamond armor now have considerable differences besides just lasting longer.
Diamond armor can take tons more damage out of the blow than Iron armor, but will come at a steep cost because of all of the diamonds.
The way to determine what armor you should use is by taking into consideration how much you are going to get if you win, and how valuable the diamonds are to you.
If you feel that you can spare the diamonds then I think that you should definitely use Diamond armor all the time.
The Battle
PvPing is quite unusual in Minecraft.
Players are free to run around and swing their swords whenever they want to, instead of being contained to some weapon speed rule.
When attacking your opponent it is a good idea to start off by sprinting at them and trying to get a critical hit.
You should be constantly swinging your sword to get as many hits in as possible in a short period of time.
Keep track of your health and hunger bar at all times.
Try to keep your hunger bar as full as possible as this will help you regain much needed hearts during battle.
Make sure that your health stays above three hearts at all time if you have any health potions or golden apples, or anything that will heal you try to use it before you fall under 5 or so hearts.
Keep your eye constantly on your enemy and stay aware of the land around you. If there are tall cliffs nearby use them to your advantage and try to knock your enemy off of it.
Catch them by surprise. Come from behind them to get a couple extra blows in before they can start attacking you.
Enchanted swords can sometime give you that tiny extra advantage that will get you the kill!
Use poison potions at the start of the duel so you will have the upper hand throughout the whole fight.
When your health starts to get low, it usually means that your enemy's health is also low. This is the best time to use any damage potions you may have.
Above all don't be a sore loser.
If you do happen to lose a fight try not to rage too much. people respect others that realize that they just had some bad luck
No one. Absolutely no one likes a rager. Never rage. people will take advantage of it.
Last of all, HAVE FUN!
In the end realize that Minecraft is just a game, and if you win or lose it should be celebrated a bit, or just move on if you lose. All items can be replaced.
