Hello, fellow PMCers! :) Today, I want to tell you about an idea for Minecraft that I've had for a while: Redstone Fences
Yes, you heard me correctly. I believe that Minecraft should have redstone fences. Let me explain this concept in more detail.

Crafting and appearance:
Redstone Fences are basically what electric fences are in real life. They pass an electric current through wire that will cause any mob damage if it touches the wire. Redstone Fences would be crafted as follows: A wooden fence in the middle of the crafting grid. Above the fence is a redstone torch. In the remaining 7 squares, redstone dust. The result of this would be a Redstone Fence. It would be, in essence, a retextured wooden fence. When turned on, it would glow and produce redstone particle effects. This brings me to my next point.

Creating and operating an electric fence grid:
Building the perimeter of your electric fence is simple. All you have to do is place down Redstone Fences in the corners of the area that you want to protect. Then connect these fences with regular string to form a polygon. Note: A fence will only function if it forms a complete loop. This means that every fence must be connected to at least two other fences. Observe the diagrams below.

Non-Functional Fence
Note that the top two fences are not connected. Therefore, the fence grid will not function.

Functional Fence
In this diagram, the top two fences are connected, and the loop is complete. This fence grid will function.

Now you have made your fence. However, it is still turned off. Turning on the fence is simple; just provide power to any one of the fence posts, and your fence will begin to function. Redstone fences will glow and emit redstone particles. The string will emit particles that resemble sparks, and a buzzing sound will be heard when close to the string. Any mob that touches the string will (obviously) be electrocuted. The intensity of the electrocution depends on the strength of the redstone signal being provided to the powered fence post.

  • If the signal to the fence post is 11-15, then the mob will instantly receive 5 hearts of damage and an additional 1.5 hearts per second.
  • If the signal to the fence post is 6-10, then the mob will instantly receive 3 hearts of damage and an additional 1 heart per second.
  • If the signal to the fence post is 1-5, then the mob will instantly receive 1 heart of damage and an additional .5 hearts per second.
Also, the damage taken by the player is dependent upon the armor worn. Leather armor will protect the player from all electrocution damage. Iron armor and gold armor will multiply electrocution damage x3 (because metals are good conductors of electricity). Diamond armor has no effect on the electrocution damage taken.

Hopefully this has given you a good idea of Redstone Fences. If you have any questions or suggestions, post them in the comments. And, as always, if you enjoyed the read, be sure to diamond, favorite, and subscribe!

Nice idea. But in practice this could make game more laggy. Just imagine that every player build that kind of fence around his/her house :-)

Yeah, it wouldn't be much good for multiplayer. But I think it could add a lot to singleplayer, just by keeping mobs away from your base.
