There's many different types of Server spawn areas. I generally like spawn areas to show or provide some message as to what the server's all about, what a player can come to expect about the server. Either that, or make the spawn very generic and straightforward, so the player can get right into playing the game.
Some server spawns totally miss this, they instead design super-massive cities or other complicated and hard-to-navigate structures or layouts. Some will have an accumulation of server moderator/admin creations at the spawn, overwhelming, and only comes across as show-offy. Players, well... at least, most players, will get turned off by this sort of spawn and will eventually log off.
I think it's also fairly important to have most of the rules and basic information about the server at or as close as possible to the spawn, while, again, not making the spawn area too overwhelming.
What do you think? Do you think a small/simpler spawn area is more important?
