Hello,

So, you just brought a Minecraft server! Well, this blog explains all you need to know about owning your server! I will be basing my guide on Bukkit/Spigot, although I will soon be making a blog about Vanilla servers!

Choose your Server Software

Firstly, you need to choose what software to use. I recommend using Spigot, as it includes neat features. Here is a comparison between the two :)

Bukkit:
  • Often updated before Spigot
  • Reliable
  • Plugin Support
  • Hardly any customization without plugins

Spigot:

  • BungeeCord support
  • Extreme customization
  • No lag what so ever
  • Supports ALLBukkit plugins.

Getting started:

When getting started, I recommend you get a few basic plugins. These include Essentials, a Permissions plugin (I prefer EssentialsGroupManager), WorldEdit, WorldGuard and HideStream. Let me explain some of these plugins.
  • Essentials - Adds many commands to improve the experience. Used on most servers.
  • WorldEdit - Lets you edit terrain using commands. Don't trust everyone with this :)
  • WorldGuard - Allows you to protect 'regions' in your world. Use this to protect your spawn, etc.
  • HideStream - Allows you to hide the annoying joining/leaving messages.
  • Permissions Plugin (PermissionsEX,GroupManageretc) - Allows players to do commands. This is probably the most important plugin you could have.
  • CoreProtect - Allows you to find out who griefed :)
  • Announcer - Announce messages to players.
  • Buycraft - Accept donations from players.

These are just the basics. I created some groups so you can choose the best for your server.

Survival:
  • mcMMO
  • LWC
  • ChestShop
  • Factions

Creative:
  • PlotMe (requirement: MultiverseCore)
  • ChatControl

Prison:
  • PrisonMine

  • PaidRanks
  • VanishNoPacket

  • TreeAssist

  • CombatTag

Have some plugin suggestions? Message them to me!

I will becontinuously updating this guide. Thanks guys!

Hey SuperAlexGamer,

I like this blog, and i like how you made it bullet points. There is a line of text that has a enter next to it making it go off onto a separate line. Line: 2nd line aboveSurvival. Keep up the great work man though :)

I'm really anxious to read this! Especially learning that spigot is better!
