I can't even count the countless faction/towny/minigame/prison/pixelmon servers that are poorly done and are a general waste of a server. Can you please give something original and well done? Instead of some garbage server that will be scrapped like all the others? Seriously guys, it's not hard to do something new. Shotbow network is popular because it has original minigames, (well not really now since people are probably copying all of them). If you wanna become a popular server then I have 3 general guidelines for you.
1. Don't use factions. Please. There is no reason to use factions. If I wanted to play on a factions server there are millions already in existance.
2. Do something original and creative. Maybe make a plugin that plays a sound when you type something, or something that lets you eat only a bit of a steak everytime. I don't know just do something that isn't already done.
3. If you're making the server just for money, stop. I know how much people love throwing their 100s of dollars at your digital minecraft server for some super godly pickaxe, but doing anything just for money, even a job in real life, is just wrong. Please cease all get rich quick attempts.
If you follow those guidelines, you might make a good server, but there are a lot more things you need, like staff that doesn't ban me when I ask them something. But these are just general guidelines you should follow if you don't want to be creating a server in a garbage bin. Oh and one more thing.
4. If you're not paying for the server yourself, don't make a server. Unless of course someone offered to pay for it knowing what they're paying for.

One reason my server has met limited success in respect to donations is that the donation store has nothing that is remotley overpowered. Because ptw servers are the lamest thing in existence.

Edit: Factions sucks. Towny forever.
Factions is a very good, easy to use plugin that works perfectly for most servers. I have tried towny and it can be a bit too complex when trying to create towns, manage towns, claim territory etc. compared to factions. Factions allows for smooth commands /f create [faction] while towny has some more advanced commands. I do like towny however for it's feature of claiming plots inside a town for people as that really helps for bigger towns or more structured towns.
I know you will probably reply to this "You're just a lazy owner!" But I will combat that. The time and dedication that it takes to run a server full time outweighs the need for a new plugin or to be looking up plugin tutorials, by the way, learning java [or any other code language] is hard to begin with and needs a lot of time and work put into it that most owners just don't have while they are managing their server.
Now you might reply to that, "Just get their staff to manage the server!". Here is my reply to that. Staff are never perfect, they either only specialise in one thing or they lack confidence or they can't do this, there is never any perfect staff. The only perfect person part of a server is the owner, and unless the owner can get his/her staff into the exact mind-set as him/her then the staff will never have full/trusted power in a server and thus they aren't able to manage it.
Your comment about doctors. Oh my, oh my, this one was even more of a shock to me than the money one... Being a doctor or nurse is a really hard job! Anyone who's just in it for the money, well I think only a small portion are and they don't stick around. Being a doctor is a commitment, you have to treat for people, night, noon and morning. These people can be loud mouthed, disease ridden or very disrespectful, anyone can walk in the door [or arrive by ambulance].

If everyone every where was to cease get rich quick attempts no one would be inovative and we wouldn't have had the industrial revolution, the computer revolution or any social media sites. Getting rich quick is the easiest way to accumilate a nice fortune of wealth in a quick manner which is the smartest thing you could ever do!

"staff that doesn't ban me when I ask them something." I have never heard of any staff ever doing this. This reminds me of those people who exagurate stories about servers just because when they remember the story, it actually wasn't that bad. Through all my experience of three years of playing on servers I have never ONCE been banned for "asking them something". From looking at your replies to people I come to the conclusion that you have a bad attitude which in fact, might have lead to you insulting a staff member, which can lead to a ban.
Well, that was pretty long but it needed to be long. If you combat me saying "Why'd you waste time writing this!" Then I combat you by saying "Why'd you bother to write that blog!". Now, if you read it all, word for word then please reply in a non-agressive attitude.

For reference sake if I didn't care I wouldn't be replying to any of these comments at all. Though I'm not in the best of moods, I'll try to reply to this thing, even though it's lagging here and there.
1. As I've said, just because you have a lot of people doesn't mean that your server is good. I usually use servers as a way for me and a friend to play together, instead of the actual server itself. Also I don't like roleplay because it's way to demanding, that's my opinion, it's not bashing, it's my opinion. You like factions better, what are you expecting me to say about this? Cool? If you don't want to follow the guideline you don't have to. All factions servers I've and many people have seen were dirt boring. If yours is popular that's cool.
2. It seems you didn't read all the comments. You people just keep on clinging to 'plugin' when it doesn't stop there. You can make an original anything, doesn't have to be what I specified in the example. Staff I've seen can easily keep a server on it's toes. It's not hard to tell people to stop.
3. It's too easy to make money these days. Remember that go fund me for potato salad? That got like thousands of dollars? Yeah.
If something shocks you that's good. That means it sent a message, or you're just exagerating like you say everyone is about experiences. Yes, it is a hard job, your comment against my comment makes no sense. It just kinda sounds like a rant from you.
The gaming community doesn't want innovation. That's obvious enough, and has facts to supoort it. If you want to see those facts don't type down there, type up there in that search bar. You should get a video. Get rich quick means being a scumbag to get money. Like in a big line up saying to the last guy "Hey if you give me 10 bucks I'll move you to the front".

1: The server that I ran did promote many friendships and when it closed it spawned around ten more "break-off servers".

The first comment by me was not meant to offend, it was just me saying, geesh calm down you're coming off like an asshole. I wrote this as the norm for these blogs is little effort. But you have burst through that rank, well done.

The server you ran promoted friendships? Internet? Promote? Ships? Friends? I can not imagine that, but if you did that good job my friend. Break off servers? Dang you must of been like a multi septiollionaire in terms of reputation.
The problem with staff and owners these days is that they abuse their power and act like oh I have a title I can do whatever the fuck I want. I have been banned before giving warnings many times. It's annoying.
If you're in something only for the money, that means you're not having fun doing it. That's all I'm gonna say on that.
