This is not a typical teen skin hate blog, nor do I intend for it to be. I am simply trying to provide facts and statistics about teen skins to better educate the creators of them what they are doing. Not all teen skins are bad, but it is known that a vast majority of them are unshaded, unoriginal, and poorly designed. Do not attack me with your hate, or start flame wars. I will delete comments of those who are excessively rude to me or others.

The Problem

There is an epidemic on Planet Minecraft currently. All over the site, the number of teen skins are growing, and there are more an more of them everyday. While they may grow popular to those who create them, they are often seen as a nuisance to those who do not create them. Why is this? Teen skins are one of the most posted things on PMC next to bucket fill packs, Faction PVP servers, and skyblocks.
The main problem many have with these skins is often not the content, though that is a part of it. The problem most have is the quality of these skins. While there are some very well made teen skins, the fact is that most of them are not well made, they have either poor coloring, poor shading, or poor design. With these aspects that make them considered low quality by today's skinning standards, it is no wonder that many skinners dislike the popularity that the poor ones often get.

While the quality of the skins is usually one of the biggest problems people have with teen skins, it is not the only one. The design of these skins is a problem that many have with them. Honestly, a majority of teen skins use similar designs and concepts, and therefore look similar. The similarity in these skins makes them difficult to tell apart, and bring up another issue. Since many of these skins are nearly identical, it is different for anyone except for the creator of the skin to tell if it is stolen. This causes many fights, and is one of the reasons teen skins and their creators are stereotyped.

Since these skins commonly use similar designs and techniques, they are at a point where they are easy to create for people. Though the creators may see them as a fun, quick little thing to do, they are seen as lazy to others. Why? Well, since they can be created so quickly and easily, and since they get so popular, it tends to make the people who put a lot of time into making their skins quite angry.

The final issue with these skins lies in the creators themselves. While the creators may be nice people, and oftentimes are good artists, most who create teen skins tend to only create teen skins. This can be annoying to s many who are not fans of teen skins. Since many of these skins tend to use similar designs and concepts, to those who are not fans of these skins it is like seeing the same thing over and over. When you see things that are the same over and over, you tend to get sick of it, like listening to the same song over and over. You get to a point where the last thing you want is to see another, especially if you were never a fan if it in the first place.

Just how big is the issue?

I myself was curious to see just how big this issue was, so I decided to calculate how many teen skins there are on the site.

Out of 40 skins posted, the average amount of them that are teen skins is 15. That is 37.5%. Since PMC has nearly 609,000 skins on the site, that makes the total amount of teen skins posted about 225,260. If that puts it into perspective, there are a lot of teen skins.

There are even more that that on site like Skindex, which average about 43% teen skins.

Skinner's thoughts

I was lucky enough to have a few really talented, and quite popular skinners give their point of view on the subject.

"In my opinion, teen skins and teen skinners in general are very touchy topics. Whilst I agree that people should do whatever makes them happy, I also feel that the amount of recognition the teen skinners get compared to people that are well known and good skinners is a bit ridiculous. Now I am not saying it is their fault in anyway that they have become so popular but it is just rather frustrating that the majority of teen skins seem to be clones of each other and yet become so popular. I feel that the teen skinners should change up their style and ideas abit more, making skins such as "Cute teen girl ^_^" (Slight exaggerated) just isn't enough in my opinion. I suggest that they stray off from skins such as that and move onto different topics and if they wish they can remain with the style they have. I feel that this is only a problem due to the fact that they have become so popular, and if I am going to be honest it really isn't fear on the other members in the community. I'm not trying to change anyone, whatever makes people happy at the end of the day is the best thing to do."

"Teen skins are just an easy way to rake in xp and require no thought. This way people can blast out skin after skin and receive credit for skins that in a way go against the rules. They are all remixes with some nice colour choices. But they are not original and they aren't outstanding. They are safe for the skin makers and they are slowly encouraging others to post content that isn't of a great quality. PMC wants skins that are different and for its members to think outside the box. Hence sharing "creativity". Teen skins are not creative if anything they are causing the skinning section to become stagnant and causing it to not move on to become a more diverse display of art."

-The Masked Bandit

"The reason why they are so popular: It's not because Minecraft is filled with teens, but with kids who want to be like teens."

"While I myself am not a fan of teen skins, they are not all bad. The ones that I have a problem with are the ones that use completely unoriginal designs, and have little to no effort put into them. If the creators strive to improve, then naturally they will begin making great content. However, this drive seems to be missing in many of these teen skinners, who 'skin just for the fun of it'."

The solution

So, while the issue may be viewed to some as unsolvable, I believe there is a solution, and it doesn't just apply to teen skinners, but also the ones who dislike them.
Always strive to improve
Try to help others improve before considering them bad.
Be willing to accept and try new ideas
Always experiment, never do just one thing
And be original

so true i mean there are no problem with teen skins :/
I totally agree with Peyton. All of them look the same and while it's great that people are creating them, there's no originality to it and I get tired of seeing the same "boy with headphones" skin in 50 different color choices.

I don't really see why it's that bad. Honestly, I've never been affected by the popularity and quantity of teen skins. I don't think anyone has. Sure they're unoriginal, but doesn't that help others shine that don't make them? Sometimes I see some impressive ones made by members who makes original ones. They're like Steve skins, never get praised, and get reported.

Well in my opinion, it isn't about the number of them. It's about only posting them on your account, there's a lot of mainly female skinners following in the footsteps of the most popular teen skin makers and they post lets say "poor quality" teen skins. They get a lot of subs from this, a lot of them aren't past level 10 and they have quite a lot of subs for a low level. This just makes more people want to post these types of skins and get a lot of recognition for a little thing.

I know what you mean. Logically speaking I don't see what the fuss is about considering teen skins don't affect anyone besides the people uploading them getting the hate.
A great, well written blog! I agree... I don't think teenskins are all that bad, but they can get annoying, especially when the creator has dozens of them, each with some different colours, and still gets insanely popular... You sir, have earned an extra diamond! ',:)

I agree with this blog.

A) Why make skins that are already there? Everything looks the same. From the sparkly eyes to the headphones, to the hoodies. There should be some variety added to Planet Minecraft
B) I like people who make teen skins who can make OTHER skins too. True skinners can do multiple styles.
C) Like LilFella said below... no Teen I've ever seen dresses like that, unless they're emo. I can say this because I am a teenager...
D) I've seen MANY people who make teenager skins with a much higher level than me. I actually take time to do my work.
All great points :)

Great blog and well written. But the funny thing is that I kinda like the skins in the blog picture
I didn't make them bad enough to prove my point, did I DX
I'd really like to see a larger sample size for the average percentage of teen skins in pmc.

It would really give a great perspective with what we're dealing with now.

Other than that, great blog!
Well, I did my best to get the largest sample I could :p

The reason I think people make them is that they are simple and that new skinners say hmmm maybe since I am not that good of a shader I should go and make this simple teen skin and it works I mean I am not saying I haven't made a teen skin but it's mostly an experiment and maybe some people just think that teen skins are good and dont want a unique skin like a zombie or something

I've generally considered the reason they exist and continue to do so is that they are relatively easy to produce (as in the rules governing the look is already set in stone and the clothes are what teens wear these days, so reference material isn't hard to find either) as well as popular to do. The high numbers propagate the popularity.

I don't hate them, but they don't particularly interest me either. Too much of a common theme simply becomes boring. Getting people to go beyond their comfort zone or try something different is difficult as the human race is instinctively against change. Some may challenge themselves, but for the most part people just don't like being out of their comfort zone.

More often than not I will come across skinners who are happy at just making mediocre skins. Good for them if they find something that makes them happy. Personal improvement and challenges aren't for everyone. We can certainly nudge them into that direction, but no one likes to be told what to do, particularly if it, yes, changes things for them.

The amount of skins to this theme is interesting, however I still regard quality over quantity. New filtering (not sure if Paril is working on something or not) will improve the visibility of what's deemed quality, so any that want to stay mediocre and below can't complain. If they want to be an awesome skinner, then strive to make awesome skins. That's all there is to it.
I hope that there is some kind of filter being made XD

Thanks for posting this. I'm still pretty fresh when it comes to skinning and I try to push myself to make things better and different for the community. It makes me feel so much better to know that some people would rather have a good quality skin that took time and thought and effort to make over something that was put together quickly.

Intresting blog. Everything that you said, it's true.
I know you don't want to hear a quote from a 22 Level guy, but I got pretty good skins too, I think. I mean, I got the basic shades and stuff.

-In my opinion, the skins all make the Chestplate of Skinning. This magic chestplate has a horrible long list of gains, however, "Sum' Horrible Mummy Curse Thingeh", as I like to call it, is cursing the chestplate. The curse: teen skins. They all give bad stuff to the chestplate, like lower speed and stuff. If trying to make a score out of it... It's +10 All Attributes and -6 All Attributes. +4, then. Teen skins ruin the image of skinning. And I'm talking about the stolen skins, and the ones that were made with awsome shading and stuff, the idea is still unoriginal. If I was to wear this chestplate, I'd throw it to a smith and chenge it's bonuses and curses, or drop it to a witch to de-curse it, translating into: stop skinning teen skins. You are debuffing the damn chestplate that we all wear!
-For all R.P.G. lovers, from Kaduu
Quite the way of relating it to armors XD

you just summed up everything that everyone wanted to say about teen skins
Thanks :)
That was what I was trying to aim for.
Well, what can I say about the teen skins are, THEY ARE PIRATES. They have an "eye patch" of hair. They are always copied. No wonder, that most of the skins in a famous creative server called E-Dawg are teen skins. I made a survey on the chance of teen skins winning skin comps in the same server. And guess what, it was 93%! That's why I hate teen skins. But, I like the teen skins with proper shading, the minimalistic shading, it makes it proper. Besides, most teen skins are not made by teens, but exceptional children. That also makes up a nickname for teen skins called "Barbies and Kens of Minecraft"

The only problems I have with teen skins is that

A) They are pretty much all different variations of each other, so it's just spam.
B) If I see any "teens" walking around dressed like this http://www.planetminecraft.com/skin/cool-teen-1799106/ I'd feel inclined to publicly humiliate them.
Ha, so true! XD

Well. Prepare yourself for a ton of words.

First of all, I don't have anything against people who make teen skins at all, nor those who oppose the creation of them, and as a whole, I think this whole subject is being treated far too seriously. Skins are just a great big blob of pixely wixely stuff. Not much more, really.

If I'm honest with myself, I know I'd prefer to see less so-called "teen skins" (The ones the target of this whole debate, essentially) on the reel and gaining such large levels of popularity. However, it's a skin. Not much more. I don't like most teen skins. But that's just me; I'm sure many either love the teen skins or the skinners that make them, else they would not get any of this credit.

My only real problem with teen skins, is, if you look at one skinner who only makes them, usually, the style or types never change. At all. Different types of skins, sure. But there's no real change in it. After this, I've seen many skinners trying some different styles, which, let's not overdo it, does not take a huge amount of effort, but it is noticeable. I've offered many constructive criticism, and it's been labelled as hate, even when I've put at as nicely as possible, such as "Hey, maybe try adding [stuff], it may make the skin look a bit better overall! :)" Sure, maybe you don't want to change; it's a hobby. However, why not? It's not nearly as hard as they make it seem. Just a few different pixels. Personally, I believe myself to be quite a mediocre skinner, nothing special at all, but I can honestly say I have evolved my shading a large amount and am proud to say I have tried new types of skins, some of which I didn't like. What did I lose from the ones I didn't like? A few minutes' to an hour's time. Nothing more. I didn't get exhausted from hard work. My brain didn't fizzle up and die from attempting to be creative. Just try new thing pls okbye

Somewhat ironically, my hands were hurting from making a skin (Trying to shade purple is heck for me :P) so I didn't write all that much. Ehhh.

Although I make skins, mostly teens, mine are quite unique. I see the issue in this, and it is true. Many people just take other peoples skins and change it a bit to make it there own, then others do it, so its hard to tell if they stole or just made their own like "everyone else", but those people stole too. That might have not made any sense xD.
Really good blog. Although, I never quite understood the whole problem with "teen" skins. Now at least, I have some understanding of what's going on.

Hey I have a question. Could you perhaps ask some of the more popular teen skinners what their opinion on this is? Because I bet the best teen skinners would actually agree with you. I'm sure they get tired of people stealing their concepts and ruining their reputation. The main problem is the people who go around and make skin after skin only changing bits like the hair length and the color of the shirt. As long as they put Effort into it, it's fine with me.
I think I might try to get some popular teen skinners view on this, thanks for the idea :)
