In the current version of minecraft (1.2.5), there are 13 types of food:
-Bread
-Apples
-Golden apples
-Cake
-Cookies
-Mushroom Stew
-Rotten Flesh (?)
-Melon Slices
-Spider Eyes
-Fish (cooked and raw)
-Porkchops (cooked and raw)
-Steak/Beef (cooked and raw)
-Chicken (cooked and raw)
This is just a fun overlook on food. I just decided to do this because I waste time waiting for wheat and melons to grow and little cows and pigs to grow up.. but I figure I should waste my time on only one food source which I will reveal at the end of this. In this article we will see which food is easiest to gather, to collect in large quantities and just all-around the best to use.
Bread:
-Replenishes 2 1/2 hunger
-Requires 3 wheat
-Staked up to 64
Bread requires 3 wheat to make. Wheat is easy to grow and collect but can take a fair bit of time to grow, harvest and replant. However, bonemeal and automatic wheat farms can speed up the process. If you decided to make a wheat farm, bread is probably your best bet compared to other methods. Bread can be staked up to 64.
Conclussion: Bread is one of the best sources of food but can take awhile to get a steady supply of.
Apples:
-Replenishes 2 hunger
-Collected from decaying leaves
-Stacked up to 64
Apples are useful for when you're chopping down trees, you are not only harvesting wood but you also get a chance to collect food too. However, apples are far from the best food source, only replenishing 2 hunger and only a 0.5% chance of obtaining one from oak tress.
Conclusion: Not good to eat raw, you best save them and craft them into golden apples.
Golden Apples:
-Replenishes 2 hunger
-Heath regeneration for 4 seconds
-Stacked up to 64
-Only food that offers potion-like affects
Golden apples are fairly cheap, only requiring 8 gold nuggets and 1 red apple. They're good for a short burst of regeneration but not to eat just as a regular source of food.
Conclusion: Not really useful anything, I wouldn't personally make a farm just for apples but maybe someone else would?
Cake:
-Can be used 6 times
-Replenishes 2 hunger per uses
-Cannot be stacked
Cake is made from 1 egg, 3 wheat, 3 milk and 2 sugar. Although cake gives you a total of 12 hunger total, collecting the ingredients is not worth your time. Also, once cake is placed, you cannot move it elsewhere. You must either destroy it or leave it in its place. Cannot be stacked.
Conclusion: I don't enjoy carry around all the ingredients to make a cake however it's up to you to decide if you want to make cakes. In my opinion, cake is the most ineffiency food to obtain because obtaining ingredients isn't worth your time.
Cookies:
-Replenishes 1/2 hunger
-Stacks up to 64
Cookies suck. What more is there to say?
Conclusion: They suck. That's it.
Mushroom Stew:
-Replenishes 4 hunger
-Cannot be stacked
Mushroom stew is a good source of food if you have just created a new world and you spawn in a swamp or mooshroom biome. It also replenishes the same amount of hunger as a cooked steak and porkchops.
However, you can't stack mushroom stew.
Conclusion: Good source of food if you like carry around a lot of them.
Rotten Flesh:
-Restores 2 hunger
-Stacks up to 64
-80% chance of triggering hunger (hunger depletes 3x faster)
Rotten Flesh: is probably the worst source of food if you do not carry a bucket of milk with you (see http://www.planetminecraft.com/blog/10-tips-and-tricks-you-may-not-know/). If you have a great abundance of rotten flesh and a single cow but no food, zombie meat may be your new bestfriend. Rotten Flesh can also be stacked up to 64.
Conclusion: It's truly a pain having to carry around a bucket of milk around with you anytime you need to feed but if you have nothing else, I guess it'll have to do.
Melon Slices:
-Replenishes 1 hunger
-Stacked up to 64
-Can be crafted into melon blocks to save storage/inventory space
Melons are quick to grow and easy to harvest but you must search for seeds in abandoned mineshafts first. Plus, melon slices only replenish 1 hunger.
Conslusion: Not a terrible food source but takes awhile to eat if your hunger bar is really depleted and you go through them fairly quickly.
Spider Eyes:
-Replenishes 1 hunger
-Deals 2 hearts of damage
-Stacks up to 64
Spiders eyes are looted from spiders (obviously). When eaten, they cause 2 hearts of damage or 4 seconds of poison. Spiders eyes are better used for potions then eating. Stacks up two 64
Conclusion: Save them for potion making and go find yourself a real source of food.
Fish:
-Replenishes 1 when raw and 3 when cooked
-Can be stacked up to 64 (both)
-Only way to obtain ocelot
Fish takes forever to obtain a steady supply, plus you need a fishing rod to do so. Fish also should be cooked for them to really do anything to your hunger bar. You also must be present whenever you fish. Can be stacked up to 64.
Conclusion: Probably any other food sources is better than fish.
Chicken:
-Stacked up to 64 (raw and cooked)
-Replenishes 1 when raw and 3 when cooked
-Chickens are 1-hit-kill mobs
-When eaten raw, there is a 30% chance of food poisoning (30 seconds)
Chickens are an easy mob to kill, only requiring a sword. Chickens meat are best eaten cooked because when eaten raw, there is a chance of hunger for 30 seconds. Chickens are easy to farm but if you decide to keep a coop, some users experience lag spikes at random locations.
Conclusion: I personnelly cannot farm chickens because of lag but chickens don't have many hearts so you could kill a large batch with a splash potion.
Porkchops And Steak:
-Replenishes 2 when raw and 4 when cooked
-Can be stacked up to 64
-Do not have the risk of food poisoning
Porkchops and steak are two of the best food sources in minecraft (so far). There is no risk of food poisoning and they replenishes 4 per uses (when cooked). However, porkchops and steak are best used cooked and cooking food takes coal and coal needs to be mined and mining takes time.
Conclusion: Good source of food but takes time to gather large quantities and when you have enough, you have to cook it all.
AND THE MOMENT WE'VE ALL BE WAITING FOR. THE BEST SOURCE OF FOOD. DRUM ROLL PLEASE.
COOKIES!
Nah, BREAD!
I think bread is the best source of food because it's easy to collect seeds, to make a farm and to grow it. Meat is also good but farms use wheat to breed so why not make bread..? And meat must be cooked which takes just as long. Steak and porkchops are just as good as bread but if I had to choose, it would be bread. This is just my opinion, feel free to continue doing what you do or comment if you agree or disagree.

Also, Cooked fish restores 2 1/2 hunger, not 3
