I always see people in massive servers containing about 1750 online players at one time, but what about the smaller ones? With larger servers hogging many players, the rest turn to moderately large ones with a maximum capacity of around 500 players. I have several reasons why smaller servers with a maximum capacity of something like 25 are, in many ways, nicer than large servers.
1) When new people arrive for the first time, smaller servers will Welcome the person in, usually involving all the players saying 'Welcome' to the player. In larger servers, there are so many people, everyone just continues what they were doing and ignore the new player
2) In a smaller server, the chat doesn't get added to so much meaning that people will listen to your comments. In larger servers, the chat fills up very quickly meaning that only the more popular people are listened to, the others ignored.
3) At the spawns in smaller servers, there is only the odd person there. In massive servers, the spawn has hundreds of players, the majority being idle, standing on the exact block people are spawned on
Don't under-estimate the fun of playing in a small minecraft server.
