Life of Steve!

My name is Steve. I can remember everything now… Ever since they found me. But let’s start from the day it all began. The day my life changed for the worst. My grandfather - He wasn't my real grandfather, but I liked calling him that because he is like family to me now – Was watching television. I ran downstairs and saw him sulking heavily. “We need to get into hiding now.” He said to me, grabbing my hand and running out of the house. I heard an explosion. My heart was thumping hard, the war had begun. The war everyone had been talking about for weeks. It had finally begun. I heard another explosion. Louder this time, seeming closer to us. My grandfather hauled open the doors of the bunker. He pushed me forwards slightly and I climbed down. My grandfather gave me a torch and told me he would come back with more supplies. He closed to doors and I was left to wait for him. I waited and waited…Still he didn't come back. But he wouldn't abandon me. He was coming back and I knew he was. There was a pile of books and pens lying on the ground in the corner. They were all covered in their own layer of dust. I picked up the first one and wiped off the dust with the bottom of my blue t-shirt. I began to read as I waited for grandfather to return. He never did. I sat in the corner with an old ragged blanket covering me for warmth. There was a few dusty supplies but only books and a blanket, also a pocket knife but it was much too rusty to be used. I kept reading and my head started nodding. I was so very tired. I eventually just fell asleep right there. I was woken by a loud explosion outside. The creepers where getting nearer and nearer. There was one last extremely loud and large explosion, everything went black. And I was unconscious.

I woke up seeming a few years older and In the middle of nowhere. I had no clue where I was. I just started wandering around the empty desert I had woken in. I finally saw trees and ran as fast as I could towards them. “Finally some supplies!” I said to myself with relief. I started punching a large oak tree to collect as much wood as I possibly could. At that point I had to memory of what happened before that day. So I didn’t remember anything about the war or my grandfather.

After I collected enough wood to make a very small house I started trying to find a flat area to build at. I had found no other humans, this troubled me. I began building my house from the wood I had collected. It wasn’t a very pretty house, just a big wooden box with a door on the front of it. I tried making myself at home inside of it.  I created a wooden sword and ran outside feeling very confident in myself. I had already built a house and a sword, but yet did I know about all the wonders that I was still to find. I slaughtered every pig I found, every cow I found and every sheep I found. I ended up with 13 raw pork chops and 15 raw beef. I had also managed to get 7 wool from sheep that I had found. I got back home just before dark. I crafted myself a bed and lay down on it. I had no idea how I knew how to craft all these things. I felt very proud of myself for knowing how to craft and build like I did. I now feel very silly, because I've seen the wonders others have built. But that’s for another part of the story.

I woke up the next morning with the urge to mine. I crafted myself a weak wooden pickaxe and began to dig a hole in the corner of my house. I collected 10 pieces of cobblestone then decided to go back up. I made myself a furnace and a stone pickaxe. I used up the rest of the power in my wooden pickaxe to collect 16 more cobblestone. I made a stone sword and went back into my tiny staircase mine. I mined around a little until I found some black ore. Coal. I Continued mining until I found 3 pieces of iron together behind some gravel. I ran back up to the surface excitedly and put my iron into the furnace with my coal. I walked slowly over to my bed. I sat down on the edge of it staring at the furnace. I stared into its hot orange and red flames, wondering…”is there anyone else in this lonely world?” I wondered this a lot. Every day in fact. I sat further back and leaned against the wall I had placed my bed beside. I was just about to start nodding off when I heard a rumbling sound.

I must have been super hungry. I stood up and walked over to my furnace, took out the iron ingots that had been cooked and took out the raw iron ore. I replaced it with the raw meat I had found the day before. I stood waiting for it to cook, watching through the tiny fogged up window on the front of the furnace. After a few pieces finally finished cooking I carefully took them out, trying my hardest not to burn my hand. Just so happens that I was rather clumsy. “Ouch!” I gasped jumping back from the furnace. “Damn it.” I walked back over to the furnace and got a rather silly idea. But it worked in the end. I picked up my wooden sword and stuck it down into the meat. I took them out 1 by one. I only had the patience to cook 4 because I desperately wanted to smelt down my iron. I took out the raw meat and placed it back onto the table.

I fumbled around everywhere for my iron, I was very forgetful when it came to storing things. I found my iron lying down on the floor below the table. I must have dropped it and not noticed. I put it back into the furnace and got a bright idea. I looked at the wood I had lying in the corner, I had collected so much. I picked it all up and realised I only had 29 pieces left. It last me for a few days. I turned 3 remaining pieces of raw wood into planks and then walked to my crafting table. I put 8 planks around the edges leaving 1 space in the middle. I crafted a chest. That’s what I needed! I placed it down beside my bed and picked up everything from my table. I dropped it all into the chest. I gave a short sigh of relief. I peeped out the small window in my door. Beginning to get dark. Hm…

I lay down in my bed and thought about everything. I asked myself 2 questions over and over…along with a couple other ones.

‘Is there others?’

And

‘Who am I…?’

I lay in my soft and small bed, thinking…thinking…thinking…

I fell asleep asking those questions. And woke up feeling very awake. I would have at least thought I would feel a little tired, but no…I was so awake. What was this strange world and why was I here?

I didn't feel as thrilled or as happy as I had any other day. I stood up off my bed, got my pickaxe and went mining. Like every other day I’d been here. The same thing every day…Never finding anything new. Always iron. Always coal. Never…never…Diamonds…

Suddenly I got an idea. I ran back up to my house and left my tiny dark mine. I blocked it up and said goodbye to useless strip mining.

I grabbed my iron from the furnace. All 33 ingots finished smelting. I made full iron armour, an iron sword and a bow and arrow.  I got supplies that I would need and ran out of the house. I brought as much food as I could carry. I suddenly felt thrilled again. I was going on an adventure!

I ran and I ran until I found a hole in the ground. I was in the middle of a birch forest, I punched trees and brought wood with me just in case. I got out my pickaxe and my iron sword. I jumped down into the cave, I placed torches as I ran. Making sure I had light to keep me going. I found more coal, I mined all of it. More iron. I mined all of it. I kept going, deeper and deeper down into the mine. I saw a red and orange bright light coming from a corner of the cave. I ran to it and found a large pool of lava. I saw a red ore at the other end of the pool, I had to find out what it was! I placed blocks to make a narrow bridge to cross. I very slowly and carefully walked across the cobblestone, it was getting a very bright orange glow added to it from the lava. I was sweating, it was hot. Very extremely hot. I could feel my sweat sticking to me and making my clothes cling to my damp body. But I was determined to mine this new ore. I jumped across the last 2 blocks of the pool and hit hard on the red ore with my pickaxe. It broke and 5 pieces of red dust fell from it. I picked them up and put them in my inventory. I found it that it was an ore called ‘Red stone dust’ I felt very special for finding it. I continued searching the cave.

I turned a corner, a wide grin spread across my face, feeling very full of myself for finding that red ore. I heard a long painful groan. And a clatter. I pulled out my sword and pickaxe. I charged through the dark cave and placed down a torch, in front of me where 3 zombies and a skeleton. They all turned to me and the skeleton tried to shoot me, I used my sword to hit away all his shots. I used my pickaxe and sword as double attacks on the zombies to deal more damage. I charged at the last zombie and as I jumped to hit bring my pickaxe down on his disgusting mutated head, I felt a piercing pain in my back. I fell straight to the ground. I felt another pain in my arm as I hit the ground, I must have landed on a rock or something. I put my hand on my back trying to figure the source of pain. I felt a thin stick against the tips of my fingers and as I brought my hand in front of my face, I noticed it was covered in a thick red liquid…I had been shot in the back. I made groaning sounds and yelled for help. But as my vision began fading out I remembered…There was no one to help.

My eyes shot open wide and a blinding light shone down on me. There where doctors in long white coats and nurses in green trousers and shirts with masks on. The light faded to a dimmer shade and I shot up right, sitting staring at them all. They stood calmly and one doctor came close to me.

“Please Steve, don’t worry. We are here to help you, do you remember what happened before you woke up just now?” He asked putting a hand on my shoulder.

“Well…yes…I woke up in a desert. Collected wood…mined a lot… went to a cave and…” I gasped and frantically felt around my back in the area I was shot in.

“I got shot…” I said confused by everything.

“Good.” He said calmly scribbling down notes into a notebook, along with a couple other nurses and doctors.

“Do you remember anything before waking up in the desert?” He said looking me straight in the eye. His voice was deep and soothing. It relaxed me to hear him speak.

“No…Doctor…I don’t remember anything before that.” I said thinking hard and looking down at the ground, as if the answers would jump out of there and help me. “I only remember waking up in the middle of the desert…”

The doctor raised his big brown bushy eyebrow at me. “Then we are going to need to bring your memory back aren’t we?” he said looking around at the other people in the room. He told me to lay down so I did as I was told. They hooked me up to strange machines, mostly around my head. They told me to close my eyes and that I may feel a lot of tingling feelings in my head, but they will go away after the process is over.

I closed my eyes and tried hard to think about what had happened before the day I woke up in the deserts. My body jolted, as if a huge mass of energy had just been forced into me. My head was tingling and memories of my parents dying flashed into my head, followed by a man saving me. This man showed in every other memory. Cooking me food. Making my bed. Caring for me when I was ill….The final memory…the one that hurt me most. The man…My…’grandfather’ as I called him, he pushed me down into a war bunker to keep me safe and told me he would come back. He never did…They got him! The explosion hit the bunker and I was knocked out and I woke up here.

My body jolted again and my eyes bolted open. I couldn’t move for a second, then I felt them removing the wires and helmet from me. I sat upright again

“Do you remember now?” The doctor said again in his deep voice. Getting ready to write in his notepad.

“Yes…I remember…” I said slowly trying to take it all in. “He didn’t come back…He promised…he promised doctor…” I started crying now, I know sounds weird for a man to be crying. But I did. Because I have feelings too just like everyone else…As soon as I stopped crying I stopped and thought about everything for a moment.

There was other life on this planet…and after that day I became one of the top scientists at the lab. Researching why people wake up here and how. They told me that no one had spawned for about 3 years before me. But now every few day’s people spawn. Loads of them. More and more every week! It became a large community, I found the love of my life and we had a family. Now, after 20 years. As I sit here writing this book in my final few years of life, I realise how blessed I was to have been brought into this world. Although many tragic things have happened over the span of my life. They were followed by great things. Greater and greater each time they happened.

Before I die, I want to request one thing.

That this book gets kept for thousands of years in every library. Thousands, millions even copies should be made. And that everyone reading this book, thinks about how great their life is no matter what has happened before now.

THE END
