The Peculiar Restaurant

-=-1926-=-

Elias Emmerson, a 39 year old detective, who always kept to himself and was extremely quiet at gatherings. Was walking down Barker Street one day around noon. He had not eaten anything since the previous evening, and was feeling rather starved. He had come across a small building with red bricks, white window sills, black roofing, and looked very out of place when surrounded by darker buildings which resided on the street. Above the dark wooden door was a sign labeled: “STEAK AND ALE”.

He opened the door to a empty restaurant with a woman standing behind the counter, she looked very distraught at seems frustrated at the lack of traction that day. Once she notices the man her mood immediately changes, she now looked happy with a grin on her face and she welcomes him guiding him over to a table. She hands him a menu and walks away giving him a moment to look over the options, the menu was tattered and in terrible condition, you could hardly read what was written. After a minute of struggle he managed to find the pricing of a simple meal and waited for the woman to come back,

he glanced over towards the counter where the woman was talking to a man hidden mostly in shadow over beside the oven. Once they realized he was staring she closed the door that was infront of the man not giving another word to him before she walked over and stood infront of the man, waiting to take his order. He orders his food still curious about what they were talking about and wanted to know more. Once his food arrives he asks about the man and she says he’s the chef, this is strange as he saw her make the food in the oven behind the counter. Once he mentions this she closes her eyes for a moment and simply walks away, this leaves the man even more curious and he finishes his meal and leaves. He thought about the strange interaction for the rest of the day, once he returned home he sat in his chair reading the news paper. He still lingered on the strange restaurant, and decided he would visit the next day. He finishes reading the paper before tossing it to the side and returning to his chambers.

-=- The Next Day -=-

He continued upon his usual tasks, first going to the newspaper stand to pick up the daily paper. Ghastly the whole lot of news was, all it every detailed was the unfortunate events that had occurred recently, today 3 were killed in a railroad incident.

He didn’t think much on the matter, as it was always a occurrence that someone had died on the railroad. Nobody took the proper precautions anymore. After reading the paper he went over to visit a friend of his, where he had tea and discussed the events of their weeks. Sometime around 2:00 in the afternoon he found himself once again, on Barker Street infront of the familiar building he had visited previously. He entered the building to see the same woman standing behind the counter this time she was aggressively chopping what appeared to be lettuce, once she notices him her eyes widen and she mutters: “no, no, no. this won’t do..” and she walks over taking off his hat and throwing it out onto the sidewalk causing the man to look at her with great disappointment. He asks her why she would do such a thing, and she doesn’t reply simply changing the subject asking what he wanted to order. He looks at her extremely confused before ordering the same thing he had last time. After a few minutes she places the food infront of him and walks towards the door unlocking it and disappearing behind the counter. He finishes the food and waits a decent amount of time before he gets up and walks over to the slightly open door, cracking it open just a bit more as he sees a dark staircase that seems to go down forever leading into a dark abyss. He glances behind him making sure he wouldn’t be followed before he starts to walk down the stairs.

He saw absolutely nothing but small illuminations on the wall from candles, the stairs were steep and if he were to make one wrong step he would certainly fall to his death at the bottom. After what seemed like hours he reached the bottom to a dimly lit hallway leading both left and right, after a bit of consideration he decides to go left, everything seemed almost a copy of it self. All the candles looked the same, so did the bricks and the floor, everything was almost too perfect. He walks down this way for a long period of time before he reaches a door, it was very large and was hard to distinguish where a handle might be. After a minute of feeling around he found it and opened the door with much struggle. He looked around the room which was, like most of the place, very dimly lit. he managed to make sense of a desk and a chair, what appeared to be a large wardrobe, a bed, and a chest off to the corner of the room. He walked around before noticing some papers on the desk, he looked at them noticing they each had names of certain people who had reportedly missing over the course of the past 5 months. He looks at the bottom right of each paper, it was stamped with red wax labeled: F.O. after a minute of examining the papers he heard a noise coming from the door, so he quickly hides the papers in his coat and dashes under the bed so that he is not seen. He hears the door slam open and under the bed he can see that the woman had entered the room,

he remains quiet as she walks around the room noticing the missing papers from her desk. She walks around cautiously before looking at the bed and slowly advancing towards it, when she was mere inches away from looking under it the door swings open and the man enters in. informing her that he had taken care of the last of them, and that he would be requiring fresh resources. She forgets of the matter and assures him that she will get more as soon as she possibly could, and that infact she had a customer upstairs that she could use. He realized she was talking about him and that he was to be their next victim, as they walk out of the room he quickly gets out from the bed as soon as they closed the door. He looks around for a weapon, and he sees a shield mounted on the wall with two swords behind it. He quickly pulls it down and grabs a sword, luckily it appears to have been sharpened before it was mounted. He silently opens the door and closes it behind him, he continues to walk down the hallway until he reaches the stairs he originally came down in. he walks past it and goes down the other side of the hallway before reaching a circular room with 3 doors, he takes the one on the right and opens it silently. This room is much colder than the others and had hooks and shelves all around the walls. There was blood staining the wood and the hooks were covered with blood aswell, in pure disgust attempting not to retch,

he walks out of the room as the smell was overwhelming. He takes the door on the left this time and all he could see was a furnace, a large pot with a fire underneath, and a cabinet. He dared not look inside any, for fear of seeing despicable things. He exits the room and stands infront of the final door, he knows that they must be in here. He trembles slightly but regains his balance and opens the door, but only to see a staircase leading up. He immediately begins to swiftly move up the stairs, they were not as steep as the ones he originally came down, but still uncomfortable to climb nonetheless. Once he reaches the top he finds himself in another building, it was dimly lit just as the hallway had been, but still was frustrating to see. The entire building was a maze, he was simply a pawn in a game he was never intended to play. He walks around slowly and the door behind him slams shut and locks, he whips around pointing the sword infront of him but to only see the door. He turns again and sees the man wielding a axe, and immediately dodges as he swings the axe down attempting to kill him. The man aggressively swung and all he could do was dodge and attempt to block. The man raised his axe leaving his stomach vulnerable and Elias swiped his blade across, causing his clothing to stain with blood as he drops the axe behind him and falls to the ground. Elias was left panting from exhaustion, and from fear of the near death expierence. He knows that it isn’t over yet, as surely the woman would be after him aswell.

He regains his composure and runs over to the door attempting to open it, but it was locked. He was not comfortable rummaging through the dead mans body, so he picked up the axe and hit it against the door as hard as he could. It took multiple tries but eventually he made enough damage that the lock broke, and he could enter. He runs in and sees the woman by a counter and turns to face Elias wide-eyed, she notices the bloody sword and she hides her hands behind her back and stares at Elias. He takes a few steps closer to her and tells her that she could come and live and be turned into the police alive, or he could kill her, and report the body to the police. She freezes and reaches behind her and throws a knife towards his head with a screech, Elias dodges and advances towards her but she blocks his attack with a rolling pin. She pushes his sword out of the way and hits him across the face with it, leaving him disoriented for a few moments. She grabs a knife and attempts to slit his throat, but within a moment he impales her with the sword and she drops the knife falling to the floor. Her blood pooled around her as the blade stuck up right in her stomach, he fell back his hands covered in blood as he leans against a wall. He lingers there for a moment before picking himself up, and walking towards the exit. He stepped over both of their bodies, took the axe again and broke the lock on the other door.

As he walked up the stairs he was disoriented from what he had done, and once he finally reaches the outside of the building he walks straight to the station. Still covered with the blood of the two murderers.
