I recently dug around to see what kind of things successful YouTubers are doing to help get new subscribers. I thought it might help some people out to summarize things here. I boiled my findings down to 3 points: branding, consistency, and engagement. You might already be doing some of these things but you may have overlooked some stuff.

The first step is your brand.

Some people might not know what a brand is so I’ll explain. Your username, avatar, logo, video intros/outros, the type of music you use, even the colours you use on your channel and artwork; they are all part of your brand. It is how your videos are presented on YouTube and what your name looks like in banners or artwork.

You want to make sure you look and sound similar everywhere you want people to find you.

Ok. Why?

When people start sharing your videos or links to your posts, new people will see and remember your name, avatar, music… etc. That’s what they will look for when they try and find you somewhere else.

If you want people to follow you everywhere, it’s important you look the same in all those places or you’ll loose followers because they couldn’t find you. That may sound funny, I mean wouldn’t they just find your name, but it’s true and even companies have this problem.

Make sure you have one brand you use everywhere important.

Step 2 in making it big is having a consistent YouTube Channel.

Do I mean consistent like similar videos? Yes, but I don’t mean repeat the same stuff.

When people like your videos they will watch more because they want more. Look at Markiplier and CaptainSparklez; they both make short gaming videos with them talking for the most part. You go there to laugh or enjoy the guys while they game.

Now imagine if Markiplier or CaptainSparklez started uploading vlogs about game updates, their favourite replays, or advertisements for games.

There is no way they would keep their hundreds of thousands of viewers. People would demand more funny stuff or want the face cams back. They subscribed to laugh and watch some fun videos about games, so that’s what they will keep uploading.

Know what your viewers want and stick to uploading that.

The final step, one last thing that makes successful YouTubers even more successful, is engagement.

So, don’t forget to like, comment, diamond, subscr- NO, NO, NO! Saying that is boring, it is not fun, and it actually doesn’t work very well. People actually stop listening as soon as you start saying that.

The best way to get people to like and engage with your stuff is to get them to feel or comment on something.

Saying “I hope you liked this so subscribe” doesn’t even sound like you like your stuff. You could instead ask a question or get people to comment on something by saying “Next episode I’ll pick a comment to name this thing.”

There are much better ways of saying things beyond “like, comment, and subscribe”. Things that make people like you and your work. Try coming up with a sentence and leave it in the comments. I’ll let you know if you’re on the right track.

All this stuff is all part of marketing your YouTube channel and if enough people enjoy this I might write some more stuff. I work with marketing brands and there’s more I can type about.

Don’t forget to comment a good way to end your videos, or you could just say hi in the comments. I probably wont bite.

I think a big idea to be successful is to also keep uploading more videos, a lot of new youtubers often quit after a year or two of uploading something like 10 videos. The more videos you upload, the more chance people will discover you.

Yup, you need to be active in regularly uploading videos. And it may take awhile to get noticed, so one cannot get discouraged. For this post I was aiming for approaches that people don't think about as much. Some channels don't see the connection between their channel page/social networks and their actual videos, others upload lots of random content and wonder why they get views but no subscribers.
I'll definitely add your point if I do another post like this, though. Thanks for posting it.
