Too big? Is there such a thing?
After a few years playing minecraft I have learned a big lesson, there is such a thing as thinking too big.
You're probably thinking, "are you saying I shouldn't build epic creations?" That is not what I am saying.
Too big. When I say this, I mean that sometimes people focus on the big picture when building things, and it can a good thing. I have made this mistake more times than I would like to have, but I have learned something that I would like to share with you.
When you think too big, for example when building a skyscraper, people often feel like they got in over their heads and rush to finish the project.
Yes, this is one of my creations, when I first started building it I had a vision of a grand sandstone skyscraper. I thought too big, and here's how: I built the skyscraper, and then focused on the details. It was huge, and looked impossible to decorate, so I didn't. As you can see, it looks kind of bland and uninspired, pretty much straight all the way up.
Another example, I wanted to build a massive hospital themed zombie killing map based on a book I read, so I started by building something massive, and tried to fill it, I never finished it, the task seemed to daunting to continue.
When I say "Too Big" what I really mean is starting a massive project and focusing on the details after building the structure, it looks impossible.
There is no such thing as a project that is too big, it's just the way you look at it.
Look at it from this perspective, Start with a single block, and build, don't think about the complexity of the finished project, just build and focus on the details while you build it, not afterwards.
This is one of my more recent projects, as you can see, it is a bit more detailed than my other ones. I started with not even a single block, I started with a half slab, I built, and built, focusing on details, I had no idea that it would end up looking like this. It actually had color until I decided to change it.
If you really want to build the skyscraper/airship/castle/whatever of your dreams, think small. Small is much easier to think about, because it is easy to build small things, and sooner than you think, all of these small details add up and you end up with something even greater than you thought.
So aspire to build those epic creations, but remember that everything truly great, has a humble beginning.
And finally, the featured picture (Yes I really did make this) is my final example, I started with an idea, and made small changes until I had the finished picture. (completely unrelated to minecraft)
