Under the Docks, Secrets of the Sea Lore/Storyline

Chapter/Episode 1: Pilot

Tomoko, age 15, has everything she could ever need; perfect home, a large net under the docks where she sleeps and keeps her things, a caring yet somewhat shy adoption father, and plenty of friends. Ayiko, her best friend since she was 5, Katsu, her best friend since she was 7 (had a crush on her since she rescued him from the large walnut tree in his front yard), and the triplets from the rich Domuutso family, (Y/n), (Y/n), and (Y/n), who are constantly bickering.

Ayiko works at a restaurant and is practically a combination of Aoi and Nene from TBHK. Katsu works at a library, sweeping up every now and then but mostly doing other odd jobs like rearranging bookshelves. The triplets do normal rich people stuff; and Tomoko works at the fishing dock with her father, Masaaki. This is where our story begins.

Tomoko was running to the other side of the docks to try to get there on time; she was barely dressed, her bracelet and sock half falling off and her bunny beanie was tilted. She had slept in again, which is strange since she listens to the ocean every night and falls asleep quickly.

Maybe it was because of the disturbance in the ocean? Tomoko had spent 3 years in tune with the ocean, since she lives under the docks. She can tell when she needs to stay at the library for one or more nights or if it’s safe to stay, so she can tell when it’s upset, angry, sad, or happy. She prefers to think of the ocean more as a person than the existential void like other people.

When she arrived at the docks, it was already half past 9, she was an hour and 30 minutes late. I should NOT have enjoyed such vivid dreams, she thought to herself.

“Tomoko-san”, called a deep voice from the end of the docks. “You’re late again, I had to set everything up myself. You’re lucky I didn’t leave you. Do you have your fishing rod?”

“SHHHHHHHHHHIITAKE MUSHROOMS- I grabbed my backpack instead of my fishing rod!” She had just realized she tossed her backpack messily over her shoulder instead of her fishing rod.

“Just use mine”, the burly man said. “I have an extra.” Tomoka had such a look of gratitude and admiration in her eyes, the burly man couldn’t help but laugh out loud, his mustache twitching with every loud chuckle. “How long have you been waiting to use my rod instead of that old bamboo pole?” he asked, getting out one last laugh before finishing his sentence.

Since before you adopted me, she thought to herself. “Since I saw you use it that first time! “

He let out another loud bellow. “Well, girl, I suppose since you're old enough to use my rod, you’re old enough to go alone, eh?”

Another look of awe appeared in her eyes as the short little girl grabbed the long, blue pole and ran around the buff man in circles. “Thank you so much, Masaaki-san!” she says as she hops eagerly into the old, rackety wooden boat and unties to rope. “Be careful, girl, or you’ll fall out and get twisted into the seaweed!” he yells, but it’s too late. She can’t hear, since she paddles at strangely fast speeds. Just as she leaves, Katsu comes over to the docks from the library which was just across the street, and simply watches her eagerly go farther and farther out to sea, until she’s just barely in visibility and casts her rod. “She’s truly a wonder”, says Masaaki. Before Katsu could reply, an annoyed yet kind voice calls out from the library; “KATSU! Get back her and sweep this porch! The spirits in the leaves wait for NOBODY!”

“Coming!” Katsu replied. Old geezer lady, he thought. Deep down, though, he really loved his grandma, no matter how crazy everybody thought she was.

It was around ¾ past 4 when Tomoko came back from the trip with a bucket filled with fish from the eastern Japanese coast. Ayiko was waiting with Masaaki, both slightly worried about Tomoko, since she’s so tiny and vulnerable and energetic. They thought she was gonna fall out and drown by seaweed tangles.

Just like her parents.

Masaaki scolded her for staying out so long after she had eaten her dinner with Ayiko. “Well, at least I got more fish than last time!”

“She has a point there, Masaaki-san.”

“Don’t take her side, girl! I thought you were worried about her too!”

“I was, and you know I really hate it when you call me ‘girl’! I have a name, you know!”

“Listen here you-”

Tomoko couldn’t help but laugh at two of her favorite people bickering right in front of her. It was a precious moment in history for her.

They both stared at her, as if to say, W h a t ?

“Guys”, she says with a smile, “just go home. It’s late.”

The two relaxed and agreed, and as they went their separate ways Masaaki called out, “YOU BETTER GIVE ME BACK MY ROD, GIRL!”

“SORRY, SORRY!”

After returning the painted fishing rod, they went their separate ways, but Tomoko quickly went to the library about half past 5. She loves sleeping in the attic when the ocean is restless. That night, Katsu was still working late. He had found out she sleeps there sometimes and now occasionally stays after a while just in case she comes by to exchange greetings. “What are you doing here?” he queries, but he already knows. “We’re about to close.”

“I come here to sleep when the ocean is restless. It’s calming, besides the pounds of dust that collect when I’m not in the attic.”

“Well, I’ll start cleaning the attic as well. You’re one of my best friends; you take care of your friends”, he says with the purest smile one could have, and Tomoko blushes the slightest bit and looks down at her rod. “Well, I’d better go now”, she says.

“Oh, right. I’ll see you later.” Katsu replies.

After she heads up, him watching, a shrill old lady voice pierces the air; “KAAAAATSU! WE’RE CLOSING! FINISH UP!”

“Yes ma’am!”

As he runs off to finish cleaning, he hadn’t noticed Tomoko standing over on the uppermost step, watching him hurry away.

And with that, they both fell asleep in separate rooms, but still slept comfortable knowing a friend was near.
