In the famous kids movie, Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs, the character Flint Lockwood creates a revolutionary machine that turns water into food. When he accidently sends the machine rocketing into the air and into the clouds, the machine gets the water from the clouds, and begins to make it rain food.
But what if we made such a thing? What if we made food fall from the sky?
Food is important to our survival, and to other thing's survival too. Micro-organisms need food too, same with plants and trees. We buy food, grow food, make food, we do many things with food. Our body takes it's nutrients and makes us healthy (depending on what you eat ;3), so food is necessary for survival.
But if the sky rained food, would it be good for us?
Yes.
Not only would we have endless amounts of food, but we would save a lot of money, we would save animals (wait for it...) because we would no longer need to slaughter poor chickens, cows, lamb and other things, we would save more land space because there would be no need for supermarkets.
However, with every thing, there is a consequence damnthatsdeep, and that consequence is inflicted on the other animals and environment. Seas would flood with food that could not be eaten and processed by most fish and animals, we would overflow the land with food that trees would not process, and animals would not eat.
Even if animals did eat it, the food that fell, might be poisonous to them. Take chips for example, the oils would clog up in the sea, eventually choking every living thing there to death. The chips, that are eaten by animals, may contain ingredients harmful to that species, perhaps poisoning them.
We, however, gain from it. We don't waste money, save more land for other things (which, in the end is destroyed for that thing) and other useful benefits.
The only bad thing is, if we made it rain food, we would do more harm than good, and eventually, probably unbalance all the world's eco-systems. Deserts would flood with food, since there wouldn't be many animals there to get rid of it (and die in return).
One nice thing, is that people who have no access to food, get lots. Kids would become nourished once again, and have a better chance of survival. But then again, we have to destroy many species of living things in return.
In the end, we would save money and land, save kids too, but we would kill many animals, clog up the sea, possibly wipe out species, and maybe even kill plants, since all their 'nutrients' are replaced with random chips dripping with oil.
So, if someone made a machine that turned water from the sky, into food, would you vote for them to send it rocketing into the sky? Or create a large riot to stop them from doing so?
My opinion: stop them from doing so.
