I never understood why Mojang decided regular skeletons being in the nether was a good idea, maybe it's just that I like the split between mobs that can spawn in different dimensions. So I put together a datapack to replace them with a Wither skeleton instead, which means Wither skeletons spawn in the Soul Valley as well as Nether Fortresses

I blame Mojang for spawning skeletons in the nether instead of wither skeletons!
That's why I hate Soul Sand Valley because of those stupid bad archers!

The reason why Regular skeletons are in the soulsand valley is because Soulsand has preserving properties which help keep fossils and bones in tact. That’s why you see skeletons and fossils instead of wither skeletons. This is just a theory, but I think it’s one that really connects well.

That makes sense with the addition of the fossils to the nether too, maybe there is a reason they only spawn in the fortress, but I still like the idea of Skeletons are in the Overworld and Wither Skeletons are in the Nether.

To add to this I may stop skeletons from converting to a Wither Skeleton if it is moved from the Overworld to the Nether, this is just a side effect of how I made the datapack for now.

One thing I think would help with a seperate datapack is one that adds Withered fossils. In part, these fossils act as Bone char for furnaces. Think of Coal but for the nether. Maybe Wither skeletons drop these instead of White Bones, since they already drop coal and bones, It would make more sense for them to just drop bones.

That'd be cool, sadly adding something like a new item is not something you can do with a datapack currently, you could make recipes, change textures, make custom items with functions, but adding a new item into the game is something only a mod can do.
