Tired of strip-mining deserts for sand to fuel your minecraft creations? Do you wish that red sand and netherrack could be renewable at last? Wait no more, because this datapack fixes all three!

This simple pack adds renewable sand through Husks and Desert Temples! You'll find your favorite dried-out corpses are sandier than ever before and have a brand new home in an old structure! This pack also adds recipes for red sand, netherrack, deepslate, tuff, and calcite, finally making all sand, soils, and stone in minecraft fully renewable.

NOTE: the latest version is ONLY compatible with 1.21.11, for the versions compatible with 1.13-1.18 see the github link. There are currently no versions compatible with 1.19-1.21.10

Specifics
In addition to their vanilla drops, Husks will now drop 0-2 sand upon death, or more with the looting enchantment following the same probabilities as rotten flesh.

The most complex part of the pack is the creation of new spawning boxes around desert temples. Any zombie, skeleton, spider, creeper, enderman, or witch that spawns with their hitbox touching the bounding box denoted below (the diamond blocks in the image form the outline of the box) will instead spawn as a husk. Like witch huts, this bounding box persists regardless of the blocks present where the temple is supposed to be.

EDIT: as of the 1.21.11 version, this aspect of the pack now works by modifying the default desert temple structure file, meaning it should work in all worlds both old and new without the previous jank, it also means the spawning box is now the default structure bounding box of the desert temple.

(Note: mobs spawning standing on top of the top block of the bounding box count as intersecting the bounding box)

Additionally, there are now 5 new crafting recipes:
sand + redstone -> red sand
cobblestone + nether wart -> 2 netherrack
cobblestone + blackstone -> 2 cobbled deepslate
smooth basalt + amethyst shard -> calcite
deepslate + andesite -> 2 tuff

FAQ
Does this pack work on desert temples in existing worlds?

Yes, once loaded into a world, this pack will create spawning boxes even for already loaded or modified desert temples.

Yes! as of the 1.21.11 version it should work without jank automatically.

Will this pack work on multiplayer?

Yes, all functions should work if this pack is installed on a multiplayer server.

I've had some non-husk monsters spawning on my desert temple, what's the problem?

Either the datapack has not yet scanned for and converted that temple yet, in which case try moving around 100 blocks away and moving back, or those mobs are spawning outside of the bounding box, which does not include the entire temple.

As of the 1.21.11 version, this means that the pack is either broken, or if bogged are spawning inside, that a corner of the temple is in a swamp biome.

Does this pack work with 1.18 changing the heights of temples?

Yes, although it should be noted that the height is determined by the location of the blue terracotta when the temple is first found and the pack is active, if this block is missing (say, the temple has already been modified or it's a skyblock world) then the spawning box will be at the old height.

As of the 1.21.11 version, it uses the whatever the structure bounding box for the temple is as determined by minecraft

Am I free to use and modify this datapack?

Yes! Feel free to use this file however you like, however if you modify and re-distribute it, please give me credit somewhere.

I'm having issues with this pack, is there anyway I can figure out my problem or have a little more control?

Yes! This pack as two built-in functions for users wanting to bugfix or customize. Type /function sand_spawning:toggle_debug to get messages in the chat every time the pack starts looking for desert temples or converting monsters to husks, or type /function sand_spawning:toggle_scanning to stop the pack from looking for more desert temples around you to add a spawning box to.

Debug features removed in 1.21.11 version

Will you be continuing to update this pack?

This pack is feature complete as I have envisioned it, but I am more than happy to release bug-fixes if needed and listen to user feedback.

Edit: I may make some versions for pre-1.21.11 if there's interest but I plan to mostly focus on newer versions

1.21.11 Update : by Karbon14 02/04/2026 1:36:18 pmFebruary 4 @ 6:36 pm UTC

Updated pack to 1.21.11, note that this does not work with older versions of 1.21 due to technical changes by minecraft. Overhauled the husk spawning to use the intended structure bounding box spawn modifier instead of the extensive function jank I was using before. This allows this pack to be fully functional in all worlds with a desert pyramid bounding box regardless of age or previous use of older versions of this pack.
