He needs to learn the rules of animation before he starts messing around with the software. I'd start with the basics, such as a stretch and squish of a bouncing ball.

I reccomend Adobe Flash.
There are alot of tutorials like those and it isn't hard to learn.

Well if he does want to do 3D here:
Hey! So this is something that I have just gotten into for fun, and I can offer a bit of advice.
1. Go for Blender for 3d modeling/animating
2. Blender has tons of tutorials, and is fairly intuitive
3. Watch as many tutorials as you can before getting bored, and then good around with what you learned
4. Find a forum, and ask tips there if you get stuck
5. Google is your friend
6. If he has a friend who already animates ask them for help or advice
7. Play around, crash everything, make stuff blow up, make strange imploding porky-pines, etc. just goof around, and don't worry about ruining something
8. SAVE FREQUENTLY!!!! (Seriously very important)
9. Take time to learn about the ENTIRE animation process before animating
10. I really wanted to have 10
Hope these help! Best of luck to him!

What does he want? 2D or 3D?:
To start off with the basics, you animate by saving a keyframe. An animation are the keyframes played in chronological order.
Start by getting a program
There are tons of free, or paid animating programs he should check out.
Blender : http://www.blender.org/ for 3D animations
Adobe Flash: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash.html for 2D. This program is great if you want to go big.
Pencil: http://www.pencil-animation.org/ A tradition 2D animation software for a Macbook. If you want this, invest in a drawing tablet.
Adobe After Effects: http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffe ... 09120559:s This is again pricey, but people can make animations out of them.
Animation does not mean you can only do it on computer. Grab a post-it pack, create the "keyframes" on every single post-it. Once done, just flip through it!
The blog http://vmcomix.blogspot.com/, has some great resources for animators.
Animating is a time consuming activity. Have fun! If you're confused there are tons of tutorials on the internet.
Hopefully this should clarify things.
