Hi, I am not the best with drawing so I may not be the most qualified but you want to decide a light source location, for this you probable want to do direction above the head, that's where the light source is for most sprites. Some locations you might want to shade: entire neck, lower cheeks, bottom of pants, lower back, bottom of sleeves on shirts, and some shading between the arms/body to make it pop out more. Oh course where you shade is always going to be different on each sprite.

I actually think with this you don't even need shading, there is a certain "simple" style with sprites that this captures pretty well. It depends what the style of thing you are working on is or if this is just an independent sprite. This is a pretty good start if you are starting out pixeling.

@Thursday you realize "Skinners" are a form of pixel art right? you can apply the same advice you would for skins as long as it doesn't mention the 3d aspects. Any "skinner" advice unless it specifically pertains to being a 3d object. Lighting/shading advice applies to ALL art not just skins too.
