There is a cheaper way using string. I don't remember it exactly, but you need to have it connected to tripwires and have lava go just next to it, but not into it. Then drop water onto it. Tada! Free obsidian without using up lava!
Well, redstone is quite plentiful..
String is infinite! Redstone is plentiful for a reason, I made a simple redstone telegraph, had more than 10 full stacks of redstone, now I have 54 left over!
Classical.

I've heard of this before, but never seen/tried.
Too bad you have to reset the redstone dust after each use.
Ok I've thought about this and I think I know how to make the whole thing automated. Put a redstone torch to the right of the last piece of redstone on the right, so that the wire is active, and then invert the signal from the end on the right, and put that to the dispenser. The redstone next to the water should be on, and the redstone next to the dispenser should be off. When that redstone starts turning to obsidian, the last block to change will shut off the signal, which inverted, will activate the dispenser to pick up the lava. Now delay that a couple of ticks and use that newly activated signal to push the aforementioned sticky pistons into the lava. Add some signal cutters and you've got yourself automated obsidian
Nice
Thanks!
Change the top blocks to sticky pistons that push the blocks above the water flow out to clear up the lava faster, to make it more automated
sweet idea!
i looked on youtube and typed in "Minecraft: how to make an obsidian generator"

Awesome bro I am going to try it right now
i've seen more efficient but this is still pretty awesome.
old stuff. This has been around since 1.2.3 and the Block id transmutation machine.
cool story, bro. but unfortunately not alot of people know about this (especially people who started playing after 1.2.3. and this is just a video showing it to people if they havent already seen it. if you've already seen it (or done it) then don't watch the video. its pretty simple.
Wow, that's awesome!
