Can this desktop computer run Minecraft?
I was looking for a cheap desktop online to use to run Minecraft on medium settings at 40+ FPS and have Skype + recording software all running at the same time somewhat smoothly.
I am not looking for suggestions, just a pure look to see if this can suit my needs temporarily
Thanks PMC!

Maybe. I don't have the computer. Minecraft does not need much RAM etc.
1
Yes, it will work if you add a decent a gamecard to it after you get it.
1
Honestly speaking, you can run Minecraft on anything. If it runs well is another story.
1
No, I don't think it would. My laptop is much better than that Dell PC. Dual Core is bad, actually. I don't even think you can go over 5 FPS on that thing.

With the OptiPlex and the graphics card that Murica provided, how would I implement the graphics card? I plan on ordering that card off of the net after numerous tries to get minecraft to start, all which have failed..
1
You open the case, take out a couple of expansion slot covers, and slide the graphics card in.
1
You make it sound easy, yet I feel I'll take hours to insert it without help xD thanks

It's really simple. I did it in two minutes with one hand and a spare computer with messy internals:

There are a million tutorials on the web too, however its pretty self explanatory. I suggest someone like LinusTechTips if you really are struggling.

Also, I second Woody's suggestion to look on Craigslist for a decent used computer/computer parts.
OP, with the budget of the PC you're looking for, this is likely one of your best/only options if you want to have an enjoyable experience. If not a whole PC, you can usually find a good deal on a gpu to throw into a low-end PC to beef it up a little.

AzrathTumblrFoxI'd be happy to show you that because it's much easier for me.
Again, we are waiting.
You still want me to?

Look on craigslist, as that won't work.
For Recording and Skype, along side Minecraft, you'll be looking at a $425 minimum to get it running solid. Look for quad-core CPUs or APUs with 6gb+ of ram. You can always load Linux on the PC you get to minimize the amount of load directly from the OS, but at the cost of simplicity
Craigslist is your best bet. If you go to buy a computer, ask to look inside, make sure it's fairly clean, and ask if you can boot it up and let it sit for maybe 20 minutes. If everything goes well, you should have no problems then..

That one, not really. But I use a Gateway FX laptop and it's like 7-8 years old but runs minecraft at 180+ FPS on Max settings.

This computer can run minecraft.
1
Unfortunately it can't run the PC version.
1
it will probably be barely enough to run vanilla on low settings. Running FTB, you can forget that.
1
As I said twice before, no. It won't even launch the game.

Trust me, minecraft is surprisingly heavy. I've got a pretty bad laptop, true, but this laptop is still newest gen (Intel i3 and the whole jig). Yet I rarely get more than 30 fps, even with optifine and low settings.
The problem is mostly that 1.8 became a lot heavier. Pre1.8 versions are a lot lighter to run due to the older and simpler lighting system.
I don't know how long it is for, but I recommend trying to get a secondhand laptop from the last or current generation, those are probably cheapest.
The smallest amount you can expect to spend on a premade if you want it to be at all decent is $300.
You COULD of course build a pc yourself for much less, but that is not something you do for a temporary pc.

I think even the worst computer in the world could run minecraft all you need to do is lower your frame rate / distance

Wrong. Some computers can't boot up the game. It's a software problem usually

Although a Core 2 Duo isn't that great these days, it'll play Minecraft (a Core 2 Duo will not run everything you want to run simultaneously, but it will play Minecraft). If you happen to find a Core 2 Quad version of that machine, that will help overall system performance and let you do your recording and Skyping while playing. However, the integrated graphics chip is not powerful enough to play Minecraft (in fact it will not launch the game at all because the chip doesn't support the minimum OpenGL version Minecraft requires). Simply spend another $130-ish to get this GTX 750 Ti. It'll be a squeeze, but it should fit in that SFF case without issue.
Better yet, you could get this OptiPlex 755 and this 750 Ti.

"However, the integrated graphics chip is not powerful enough to play Minecraft (in fact it will not launch the game at all because the chip doesn't support the minimum OpenGL version Minecraft requires)"
This is untrue. I have owned the same system before with the same exact specs and it ran at 15-20FPS.

What Minecraft version were you running?
1
Normal 1.8.8.
1
Proof or it didn't happen. I tried on similar system and it barely run it on 2-3 fps let alone load the world
1
Not to mention the fact that I've tried running Minecraft on several computers with the same/a very similar graphics chip on multiple operating system versions with zero luck.

What about the optiplex without the graphics card? For just minecraft, nothing else?

As I said in my post, that integrated chip will not even launch Minecraft:
It's too old.
Also, I second Woody's suggestion to look on Craigslist for a decent used computer/computer parts.

Wow, thanks Murica, I spent at least 30 minutes typing up a well-explained version of basically exactly what you said, except I gave many more examples. And then you posted this first. You sweetie, you did all the work for me (and wasted my time D:).
But yeah, @OP, basically this ^^
And if you're comfortable with it, I'd recommend checking Craigslist (or another buy-used-local site, if you're not from the US) to find a good deal on either a computer or parts for one. Where I'm from, there's usually at least one amazing deal on a high end part per day. (There's a 280x listed for $100 here, which is enough for 60fps on almost any modern-game in 1080p on high/ultra settings). So you might want to at least look at a buy-local website. Used hardware, as long as it's in good condition, is often a good idea for a low-budget rig.

Nope. Not even close. Most laptops are going to perform better than this machine. In fact, I work for the school district where I live, and we just threw away a couple hundred of these things because they were at the end of the 5 year technology cycle we have them on. We did upgrade to 7020's with ssd's and an i5 in them, those are probably more up your alley if you want generic dell pc's. Otherwise, build your own or spend more than a couple hundred on a pre-built pc.

To add on to what I said (Can't edit for some reason) with screen recording software you'll probably get around 5-10FPS. It can't handle all that. I would recommend giving it a decent graphics card.
1
With OptiFine on low settings and without any upgrades it will get you 30 fps max.
I used to have the same one until I sold it.
