Hello everyone! I am looking to upgrade my current PC. Here are the specs I am looking at:

- Intel Core i7 4700HQ(2.40GHz)
- 12GB Memory 500GB HDD 128GB SSD
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M
- 1920 x 1080

I am wondering how well this will run Minecraft (An estimated FPS would be nice) , and just how it would run in general with applications like Photoshop, video editing, etc.

People! Stop giving this guy bad advice! This is a laptop! Not a desktop! All of you are suggesting he switch out parts with desktop parts THAT WON'T WORK!
He just wants to know if it will run the stuff he wants, that's it!
Anyways: Yes it will run minecraft very well. My GPU is not as good as this one and I still run 100 - 400 FPS without vsync. Photoshop, Video etc should have no issue on your Core i7 either.

Just go buy a 1gb mac for $100 and you will be fine.

Cause mac is great

I'd say just get a laptop that can support minecraft at 50 fps and you will be fine.

Everyone lets clear things up:

You have to be careful when comparing Laptop and Desktop CPUs'. For example Desktop i5 CPUs are almost all quad cores. Laptop i5s are all dual cores with hyperthreading. All desktop i7 CPUs are either 4 or 6 core CPUs with hyperthreading. Some laptop i7s are dual core with hyperthreading, and some are quad core with hyeprthreading. Laptop CPUs are always clocked lower than their desktop counterparts to reduce power consumption and heat. You have to keep these factors in mind.

That really depends on the CPU and what you are trying to do with it. For games alone in a laptop, especially if its an Intel CPU with hyper threading, i would take the much higher clocked dual core over a slow quad, but if he needs to do some video encoding on it or other highly parallel tasks the additional cores of the quad would more than make up for the lack of clock frequency.

You cannot say that more cores or more frequency is always better, that always depends on the application and if the two chips involved have the same architecture. If you start comparing AMD to Intel or even between two CPUs of different generations you cannot compare them using clock frequency since their performance per cycle varies.

Last but not least, to those who are calling others stupid, idiots, and etc. based on what they know and being biased between Intel and AMD are just plain ignorant.

@OP That can run Minecraft above 60+ FPS no problem. Also for the storage is that A hybrid or do you have two 2.5" compartment? If you do have two I'd recommend switching the 120 SSD for the SAMSUNG 840 EVO 250 not only does it have a higher capacity as it MIGHT be cheaper MAYBE I don't know what your other one is so I might be wrong.

I like how this thread is filled with idiots. First of all it doesn't make sense to play minecraft with 8 cores because it wouldn't make a freaken difference. There is NO game today that run all 8 cores of an amd. Intel though has superior drivers and better technology, also runs on lower power.
GHZ does matter but depends on how good your cpu is in other things. GHZ is only clock speed and is usually not the case of a good cpu.

A 3.4 ghz intel core i5 4670k runs minecraft with the same speed as an i7.

Minecraft doesn't need a good graphics card. Since i can run minecraft at 60 stable fps with inbuilt Intel card.

Minecraft is mostly about cpu because the commands (Break, place, build world) are all processed by the cpu.

Get some knowledge kids before you post your ridiculous comments here.

I'd want to point out,
GHz does not matter. It depends on the CPU cores.

The more cores, the more commands that can be sent at once = everything happens quicker.

Also, to zacthedead.

I don't think you noticed, but the OP picked an Intel CPU, therefore he'd need an Intel MOTHERBOARD. Amd processor + Amd Motherboard = fine.

Intel + Intel motherboard = fine.

Intel + AMD or Amd +Intel = fail.
. Unless it's graphics card of course.

You ppl know nothing.
My EXTREMELY OLD pentium 4 HT 3.0Ghz processor got owned by my intel pentium d 2.6GHz.

GAMES depend on graphics; for the rendering of textures, landscapes etc.

The processor runs code, commands, and stuff.

(To all who are talking about clock speeds of components)
Omfg, before you post, research pls. Your lack of knowledge is a disgrace.

1. It depends on how you setup your pc. (programs, startup scripts,...)
2. The system you are running. (Linux, Windows, Apple's OS,...)
3. And one does not simply ESTIMATE a fps... its impossible to do. Cuz all pc are diffrent even with the same spects. It greatly depends on how you use it.
4. Your drivers... Some are faster and more stable then others. (mostly they will be the same though)
5. Overclocking ^_^ My personal favorite. I overclocked my old pc from i5 dualcore 2.5GHz to 3.2GHz.
6. Personaly i doubt the use of that much RAM will increase anything. I only got 4 Gigs DDR2 <-- Yeah its old ik... But my vanilla minecraft run up to 150FPS on best settings. and over 90 on Voltz.
7. If you need any info about servers or your computer don't hesitate (if i spelled that right) to send me a PM :3

I'd say about 50 fps in MineCraft.
If you're not working with big video/art projects and such I'd recommend lowering the RAM to 6 or 8GB. Also remove the SSD, because with the money you save you can buy a better CPU and GPU resulting in better fps results.

Emmm.. at this pricerange id not waste my monney on that ssd. Save yourself a lot of money on your ssd, and take 8gb ram then use the money to up your cpu and gpu. Doing this will give you at least an other 100+ bucks to spend on the parts that will effect your games the most. Fast boottimes are fun, but not in exchange of preformance on this level.

I hope you guys realize he's listing specs for a laptop.

i7-4700HQ @2.4 GHz signals it's a mobile processor
GTX 765M <-- M is for "mobile"

My advice: unless you absolutely need it to be mobile, just build a desktop computer. The specs on that laptop are pretty nice, but you're not getting much bang for your buck compared to a desktop.

zacthedead
2 cores at 3ghz is 6hz max.
An AMD fx at 2.6ghz (8 cores) is much more.

No. You can't add the clock rate of each core and use that to determine that the CPU will be faster. Each core is *essentially* a separate "processor" in that each one has its own thread (or pair of threads).

No one seems to understand that....... Also, talking about how more ghz = more speed....which is incorrect. It all matters about cores.

8 core, 3 ghz will beat a 4 core, 4.7 ghz processor.

Cores don't always matter, Not all programs take advantage of more than 4 cores while some even use less. The difference is the CPU architecture which determines it performance.

Why are you getting 12gb of ram and 128gb SSD? You only need about 4gb of ram unless you are running a server box. As for the SSD, you only use that to install your OS on, do not install anything else to it. As for the GPU, I suggest the 650 Overclocked, that is a pretty decent card. As for the CPU you should get this.

Installing games on your SSD is a clever idea too. @OP, increase processor speed to about 3.4ghz+

1. The cpu is decent, I would reccomend you make sure the Motherboard works with the one you want. I am suggesting to get this cpu:

http://shop.amd.com/us/All/Detail/Proce ... 320FRHKBOX

2. 12gb of ram is alright, just make sure to have a decent mhz with it.
2.1 If you have the ssd with your OS and main games, (you'd want a 256gb one) and at least 1tb for data.

3 You're picking a mobile gpu right?
If not, make sure you want the GTX 760, or the GTX 770.

so which is bigger? 4.25 or 9.60?

i know one of the intel i7 processers have 12 logical cores and 6 physical cores ._.

Agreed! Especially alienware... Even more overpriced than other Pre-built comps. I've seen very few pre-built computers that are worth the price. My comp with 2gigs of Vram, 8gigs of ram, and 3.80GHz quad core processor computer was $800. I built it myself from looking on Newegg for hours. I can play most games, including BF4, with every setting on ultra and still have 70FPS. Minecraft with optifine gives me 130-180 fps on a normal day.
Well back the origin of this. See the difference? A better computer for cheaper? Pre-builts are overpriced, and building your own is cheap.
