Looking for a new computer.

To start off, I have the computer that I adore so far but either this year or the next I plan to get a job. I am hoping to buy and set up my first computer on top of that. Worth noting that despite the fact that prices go down over time, I want suggestions for a brilliant computer to work with. I'll probably be using old parts on this computer with the new one and I already have the necessities such as the keyboard, mouse and monitors.

I believe I would have a budget of around £800 (1142$). I want to use the computer for gaming and recording for YouTube. I have chose my own case that I love and again as mentioned before, I may use parts from the computer I have now.

Specifications I have of the computer now:
CPU: Intel i5 4440 @ 3.5Ghz
RAM: 24GB DDR3 @ 1600Mhz
GPU: GTX770 Lightning
Storage: 3TB hard drive
PSU: 750W (I know, overkill, but it's worth it seen as I may put more parts that need the power)
Motherboard: Asus B85M-G

I'm not at all a professional with computers. Though I believe I should upgrade to a better graphics card, get another 8gb of memory as 3/4 slots have been filled on my motherboard, and an SSD. If possible, perhaps a better processor too.

I have chosen the case NZXT H440.

If you're unsure on what this thread is about (tl;dr): I am wanting advice for part components on my future computer on the forum.

Thanks,
Quentin.

You won't be overclocking with that cooler, but the extra 2 cores you get over a mainstream i7 will help speed up video rendering quite a bit, and you can get a better cooler in the future if you want to overclock. The 212 EVO is a very inexpensive cooler, but it can keep a stock-clocked 5820K around 70°C under heavy load.

The SSD is a great price for a fast 500GB-class drive. That's about all the rationale behind my choice.

The good thing about X99 is that even the cheapest motherboards for the platform are still of high quality. Even so, I didn't get the cheapest model - instead, I picked out the cheapest model that has USB 3.1 ports so you don't miss out on that.

The power supply is a top-tier unit, and I picked one with ample wattage for overclocking and even potentially adding a second GPU. I ran two 980s and an overclocked 5820K on the 650W version of that PSU, and it didn't break a sweat.

I didn't include a GPU upgrade in the list because your 770 Lightning should last you a couple more years if you're planning to play at 1080p.

Bookmarked. Thanks a lot for this. I'll keep an open mind however in case I want to upgrade from the GTX Lightning though.

Hey dude, just wanted to pitch in my opinion .

Over the years I have built dozens of computers for myself and friends and have gained some decent experience from it. You honestly could sell 2/3 of your RAM and be completely fine, I've only had one computer with more than 8 and thats because I was using it for intense high load video editing. I agree with Waec about upgrading to a small hard drive, just enough to keep your OS and some games if you want. Overall you seem to have a decent plan, so good luck getting a job and have fun gaming!

I use my total amounts of RAM to help with rendering for Adobe After Effects as I am more comfortable with the editing software. The program is memory consuming.

Whatever you do, don't SLI that card, replace it with a newer, better model.

I pretty much believe SLIs have the same performance no matter what card, but give more VRAM. Not totally sure however.

Though I was not going to do that anyway.

A 750w Ace, trust me I know it looks bad looking at it's price but it has not caused me any troubles at all for the 9 months I've had it.

Though I was planning on saving up for a more guaranteed safe PSU, I decided due to nothing major things happening with the PSU I have right now I decided more on my other components.

Just wanted to note that I know the dangers of having a cheap PSU, but again as mentioned my experience for 9 months has been great. So that's a plus (at least).

I'm glad it's been holding up so far (most likely because it isn't being stressed), but for the new computer I strongly suggest you get something with a higher build quality.

If you haven't seen this before, it's a fairly comprehensive list of different power supply models and how they stack up against each other. Going by your budget, I suggest you pick one listed in the first tier.

Thanks for the link. Though I have a question. How would this improve my computer?

Unless they're false advertising, I think 750watt is more powerful in comparison to a 500w (say) Corsair? Maybe EVGA?

Also, bookmarked the link. Appreciate it again.

Usually they get you with the "xxxW max" vs. "xxxW continuous" designation. If your PSU says 750W max, that means it will be able to supply 750W of power for short bursts, but it can't sustain it. The problem is, you don't know for sure how much power it can provide sustainably. A 750W unit might be able to provide 700W continuously or it might be able to provide 600W continuously. Sometimes they list the continuous rating, but not always. This type of behavior is found on units with low quality components.

Also, your unit only provides up to 444W on the 12v rail, which is what the power-hungry components run off of.

Oh okay - Thanks for the explanation... But damn, just 444W.....

Still, thanks (again).

If you plan on getting a job later this year or next year, then this build list will be pointless, as everything out today, will be about obsolete due to the new hardware coming out.

I won't be upgrading until I finally get a job so any part that is designed to be better than the components I already have would be better. I already mentioned this in the OP.

Yes, I noticed it was mentioned in OP, but lets use this example:

You have a 1980 car, you want a better and faster one, so you give a budget and plan on buying the highest end 1990 one, well you don't get a job till 2000, and have enough money now in 2010. Do you still want to spend that money on the 1990 one, or go ahead and get the newest and best stuff for the same price?

I understand what you mean (and also said this in the OP), but the thing is I won't be upgrading in my time from today until whenever I get a job as I previously mentioned. Therefore I'm looking for parts to upgrade my computer despite what the prices are to be in the future.
