Why not use the classes from D&D as a starting point? Some interesting races would be the lizardfolk, ratfolk, and devas (celestials).
Here's my very first Pathfinder character I built to test and learn the game system with a friend.
Name: Egram Windcraft
Age: 55 (Dwarves reach adulthood at age 40)
Gender: Male
Race: Dwarf
Occupation: Wandering Mercenary
Weapons: Light crossbow, longsword, dagger, darts, warhammer, crossbow bolts
Appearance: Wears scale mail on the road over an explorer's outfit. Multiple belts across his body allow easy access to his blades, warhammer, crossbow, bolts, and throwing darts.
Personality: Very distant and hard to talk to. Though a very gruff character, Egram is of the Chaotic Good alignment.
Backstory: A ranger from the Windcraft family, creators of the first Airflier class non-magical dirigible airships. Unfortunately, as two centuries went by, the technology had been adapted and made better by other clans as well as the human races. The Windcraft name no longer holds any strength, pride, or value.
