Making a 2D game, pick an idea!
Hi PMC!
So I am starting working on a game and would like to get an idea what this community likes more. Would it be RPG game? Or horror game? You choose or post your own ideas and after few days I will pick the genre I will go with and start working on game.
When I start the game ill make separate thread for it development!

Please try to stay on topic and ease down the arguments.

I posted this vote poll on few other sites so what will have most votes, ill make. I am making a game now with my friend, we joined forces! Since he watches a LOT of anime
I thought he can maybe make up a story for a small 1-2 hour game as our "demo" game and "learning" game, since we are both new so this will be as practice for us!

Wow. It's fun watching you all rage xD
A custom engine counts as not using an engine. You aren't USING ONE. YOU'RE BUILDING IT YOURSELF. Most large companies build their own engines, as well as Minecraft did.
I mentioned that you should build your own, I didn't say make a game running on no engine at all

yeah lets have a beginning programmer build a functional engine from scratch for a 2D game, sounds logical. It's definitely going to be worth their time.
Oh, did I forget to mention that these companies that make their own engine often have dozens of programmers on the job?
Minecraft is an exception, as it was INITIALLY made by just 1 person. Its development has taken 4-5 years now, and its still being updated, improved upon and changed. by a team of around a dozen programmers, now.
So while I can agree that a custom engine is worth it if you have a team with the skill and time and a plan to make more than 1 game, For a solo beginning programmer making their first serious game its not an ideal option.

Isn't Minecraft using LWJGL
Edit: nvm. I'm just being stupid

on another note, if you decide not to go for realism but instead for something more fantasy-like, Lumini is an excellent example of what you can do graphically.
http://www.lumini-game.com/
originally made with Unity 4, they updated to Unity 5 and have achieved even more beauty.

Wow. That Wild west game, its really neat! Did you start from scratch or you had pre-knowledge on how to program and use Unity?
1
Thanks! Actually I've been programming since I was about 12 (I'm 17 now) so I did have previous experience but I've had a really good team working on it with me.

Something that plays like hotline miami would be cool.
1
I second this.
1
I third this!
Now when I think about it, it really might be a good idea BUT, if I was about to make that with some kind of magic wouldn't people say its ripoff from Hotline Miami.

VaiYour complete lack of correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation
You know how annoying it is to use correct grammar and spelling on mobile? I guess you don't use horrible touch screens...
ALL games require an engine.
Minecraft has a custom made engine
Grand theft Auto 4 and 5 has its own engine caled "Rockstar Advanced Game Engine" (RAGE for short).
Terraria uses the XNA engine.
All console games use a basic engine framework for it to work.
Call of Duty Advanced Warfare uses the IW engine.
Elder Scrolls 3(Morrowind) to 5(Skyrim) and fallout 3-NV all use GameBryo (look it up, its an engine that regular consumers can use too)
ALL Valve games use the Source engine(also usable by regular consumers).
that a good list for you Vai?
Now you name some that don't have an engine.
or should i say..
"nao yew go say sume gmaes that dun hvae an engine"
Don't go saying good games don't use engines. THEY ALL USE THEM.
And thank you for that statement Fantasy.

Wow, a simulator? I've never heard of that before! What an amazing brand new and creative idea!
Psssst... It's not.
You should do something like a cool adventure RPG.

PrototypeTheta
Considering this guy is a completely beginner, that's probably the worst thing he could try and do.
Yes, homebrew engines are theoretically better, I'm not going to say you're wrong there. But for a single, inexperienced developer, trying to build a custom engine might as well be a death sentence for the project.
I started out with a custom engine, and so did many of my friends. There are a few tutorials that show how to do it with OpenGL(Like minecraft) or just from scratch.
I'm assuming he's already fluent in java, if not he needs to at least do that before starting game development. The tutorials on how to make an engine from scratch are really easy and simple to follow along with as long as you're fluent in a language
1
Thank you guys. I also have some knowledge C# and well I guess not that really important for a game, CSS3 and HTML5.
1
Thank you guys for input, any quality tutorials for Unity or should I go on a wild adventure on exploring it by my self?

You don't need to use any engine or anything like that if you're going into game development.. In fact, it's better if you start from scratch (no engine) if you're going to be making a 2D game, and once you understand those maybe move onto Unity or Unreal4

Also adding to tutorials, if you want to try some more advanced things with Unity, Sebastian Lague is probably one of the best for tutorials.

its much harder to make a game without an engine. ALL games are made with an engine, wether its made from scratch or off unity or unreal... tell me 5 games that have no engine and is playable
1
No they aren't. Your complete lack of correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation just leads me to not take anything you say seriously. There are a lot of games that do not use engines. Do you even know what an engine is?
1
1. attacking someone on their grammar to weaken their argument -snip-
2. engines make it a lot easier on programming beginners to make fully functional games, since they do not need to make everything from scratch.
3. Apart from minecraft, name 5 games that use no existing engine (engines unique to a company count as engines too) and that have become a success. I'm not trying to dis you with this one, I am legitimately curious.

there arent enough roguelike top downs imo.. only good one that i know is Binding of Isaac, so you could do a topdown roguelike?
1
This is a good idea, also I have unity installed from before but hadn't have time to check it out.
1
I'd say uninstall the version you have since it'll most likely be outdated and get the latest version, it replaces monodevelop with visual studio (easier to use imo) and has a bunch of bug fixes

Use anything BUT Unity. Unity is what creates the horrific German Simulators that Nerd^3 plays. Don't. Ever. Use. Unity!
1
What would you suggest instead? Flash? GameMaker?
I can understand your distaste of those simulators, but that is due more to bad game design than to the Engine being insufficient.
Not to mention that Unity 5 is approaching the Unreal Engine in some of its abilities (though not quite close in many others), and is definitely an ideal engine for beginning game designers, as long as you don't expect to be making Triple A games.
For a 2D game, Unity is perfectly sufficient and easy to use. I learned all of its abilities in a matter of weeks and the only thing holding me back from designing and publishing games right now is that I'm the WORST at anything that requires programming (Don't bother with tips, I've tried a LOT of things).
Anyone who does not have that block will find it very easy to get started with, especially involving 2D games.

So Kerbal Space Program is a horrific German Simulator is it?
I would say Unity is pretty much a good starting point if you're looking to learn a little about game development, it's very well documented. You might face some snobbery over it (see above), but it's mostly harmless.
Not to mention this person is quite obviously a beginner... other more advanced engines are basically not going to be an option.

amazoDog161You should totally make one of those funny simulators...
no. no. NOOOO xd
Anyways, I say make an RPG.
Cause.
1
Simulator might be the easiest
1
But then again, you need an original idea in that area.
Stuff doesn't just get popular like that.

1
Which one would you personally want to make? Probably the most important question you can be asked at this stage.
1
If you're using RPG Maker VX Ace then you're going to be pretty limited in what you can do. Two people have already suggested simulators, but those are pretty much out of the window. You can really only build games similar to Pokemon or Zelda in that program.
1
I put a "simulator" option to see how many people would like it. If it would be a sim game what kind of language, engine and program would you suggest to use for?
1
Sorry about the slow reply, but I would recommend using Unity. I've already seen people in the thread complaining about Unity, and anyone who does complain has usually either never used it or hasn't learned it properly. I'm currently using Unity to build a 3D RPG for Steam. While I'm not meaning to self-advertise, our trailer is here to give you an idea of the graphics you can achieve in Unity:

This was all recorded live ingame. Personally I think that Unity is an amazing tool.

Honestly, this depends on your skill level in each area. If you are good at coming up with stories, I say RPG or Horror, or Adventure. Otherwise, I'd say Simulator.

I am going with well what I consider most for starters and that is RPG Maker VX ACE. So far I learned few things here and there but for now I need an idea to make an story around!
