Going back in time implies a general breakage of time convention that will likely spiral events out of control depending on what you do, even if it is small; subtle changes can adjust decisions that would progress starting from little things, possibly making completely different outcomes. Your entire presence, not assuming different 'alternative' timelines, would already be so foreign that the presence of a time machine then would be irrelevant. If you take the 'well, that's what was fated to happen anyways', same difference, some biblical scale time-managing entity decided that's what would happen and you are merely playing to the tune of a wider story.

lets suppose you doesnt go back in the timeline when you go back in time, but instead you are still going forward in the timeline, but in the moment you alter the timeline (past) you create an alternative timeline, which you may not be in
