One of the definitions for "inanimate" (adj.) is "not endowed with life", therefore a tree is not an inanimate object. Js.

I was wondering, would a person in a costume be considered in the contest? It's really hard to find inanimate objects with Human characteristics.

A person in a costume is absolutely not. Example: A nutcracker doll, or teddy bear that is inanimate yet human shaped is fine. Just don't blur the line too much or you risk being disqualified.
